Our own wedding! We "begged, borrowed & stole" as much as we could to keep costs down. My dress was made with a vintage wedding dress pattern by my sister in laws mother for $300 (cost of fabric) and my hubbys tux was an ebay score. A friend made the invitations and ran them as "test print" at her work (she's a graphic designer). No flowers for the church (a beautiful neo-gothic church that didn't need dressing up) and we used our vintage car as the limo. No big wedding party as I wouldn't dream of putting my girlfriends through that horror of ugly matching dresses (been there, done that), and a good friend, who's also a rock photographer took our wedding photos for the cost of film.(http://dustinrabin.com/). He made us look like rockstars!
We had our reception in a bowling alley (5 pin, of course...after all, we ARE Canadian!) and the food was a hawaiian themed buffet. We spent the summer looking for colourful vintage bowling balls to use as centrepieces and we stuck flowers in the fingerholes (later the balls made it into our garden.) Speeches were short, NO BORING SLIDESHOW and everyone bowled and mingled and, of course, the shoe rentals were free! You had to wear them to dance on the bowling lanes (which a lot of people did!). Instead of annoying clinking of glasses to get us to kiss, you had to bowl a strike. To this day (almost 10 years later) our friends tell us it was the most fun wedding ever. I'm still a crappy bowler though.

@Holiday05
These are outdoor staircases in Montreal the original poster is talking about. These staircases are usually narrow, made of metal and covered in snow for 8 months out of the year. Sooo not the same as indoor staircases.
Just wanted to clarify.

I love the shades! Also, the bases are slightly different, as are mens and women's anatomy, so I think it's doubly cute!

Having moved from a modest 60's backsplit in the 'burbs to an even more modest early 80's condo in the heart of the city, these quotes ring true to me. Living in a small space leaves more time for actually enjoying it, instead of cleaning it!

I agree with Whale 100%. Other than slipcovers, taking on a reupholstery job yourself will almost always result in heartache. A professional upholsterer can help you reinvent the piece, especially if it is a quality piece in the first place. I always say, if it's lasted 50 years (or 30ish in the case of the before sofa depicted), it will last you 50 years.

I agree, kids need to be challenged, not coddled. A scraped knee or a splinter never killed anyone!

Everyone here in Toronto is obsessed with danish teak. They turn their nose up at walnut, and they'll run screaming from blondewood. I try to focus on Canadian designed pieces for my store but it's challenging as everyone is stuck on the Herman Miller/Knoll/Scandinavian bandwagon.

I'm a vintage furniture dealer with a background in retail/restaurant and hospitality interior design, and trust me, MCM dressers in good condition are readily available. Everyone had them back then and everyone took good care of their furniture. Just check your local Craigslist listings or estate sale listings. I come across pristine 50's bedroom sets all the time when I'm buying for my store, and I have to turn them down because everyone wants a queen or king bedframe (these are typically double beds) and unless the dressers are danish teak, no one in my market wants them either. It's sad because I truly love these pieces but cannot sell them.

ENOUGH with the "it's MCM and solid wood...we have to put it up on a pedestal and not touch it". Should we light candles and create a shrine to it too? Geez....
I think it's a fantastic redo and while the original walnut drawer faces didn't make the cut, the end product is fresh and new and will last longer than an Ikea hack.
