Who acts like this in other people's homes?

My design allergy is people who can't appreciate 'good' design without filtering it through their own tastes. That's a lack of critical thinking I can't abide..What inspires such people?Better question is ...would you actually take their design advise, much less hire them?I would hope not.If you need a 'designer' of this type...chances are you also need an architect, engineer and both fine and commercial artists.Money helps too.Actually, the list of design professionals you desperately need is endless.Fortunately.most people know exactly what they don't like and good design allows them to be inspired to enjoy what they do like.Makes the design world go 'round and 'round.

Renovation and decoration are not the same things.Cleanliness and animal husbandry are not design elements.Minimalism is classic design theory and should be functional.Minimalism should never be reduced to a theme.Dumbed down minimalism is bad design.Just because you like it doesn't mean it's good.Always look at design with a critical and educated eye. You'll be very surprised what you do like.I've seen some very frou frou, but good minimalism on AT.The minimalists hated it.

Most self proclaimed minimalists at AT are using minimalism like it's a theme.Ah-choo....my design allergy is acting up.

What I would like to see is an essay, written by a vegan, that explains why they think it's ethical to be dependent on slave labour to harvest their food for them.Commercial farming IS destroying the global environment and fully dependent on slave labour. Why are their merciful hearts not open to include the suffering of all?You say you care about cows, but you don't seem to give a hoot about the cow's caretaker or the society that the cow must live in.When making anti meat statements the worse circumstances found are only fodder for argument.
The argument that eating meat is merely amoral, for many, has been done.I think it's time for vegans to be put to the same fire as meat eaters have. Can they honestly say that their food was harvested by people, that weren't just as thoughtlessly used, abused and ...yes,many times murdered like cattle? As far as I'm concerned,it's a two way street and vegans are eating roadkill.... they refuse to answer for it and haven't had to.Typical first world arrogance.

I live in Ontario, Canada where people are regularly trafficked from all corners of the globe.I am well aware of the problem.Everyone has the option of formal complaint to Apartment Therapy when you are offended by their editorials. That would be an appropriate way to deal with something you consider in poor taste.Too much effort for you?

Context IS everything.I still don't believe there was any ill intent, when using the word porn, in this editorial.Your offended?I understand that completely.Do something about it.Make a formal complaint, instead of a comment, that everybody has to 'understand' on your behalf.I have no context to understand your point because I think your making statements that are pointless in the context of this editorial. That still offends me.We are not discussing pornography here. You and a few others are.Very offensive to me,but you are entitled to express your opinions wherever please.Email AT and explain to them your upset by their use of words.

Eclectic ALWAYS means a collection of stuff. The type of stuff being left up to your own tastes, knowledge and experience or lack thereof. 'Just saying...' No wonder there are so few fans of graphic art and illustration on AT.

That's my peeve about fads in design.Dumbing down legitimate design to serve the masses.By the time it trickles down to the average person ,design becomes mediocre at best and unrecognizable to others ,who do appreciate it originally, to begin with.

Your tastes should evolve as you progress in life. What I find lacking in most every day design blogs...etc is sophistication and refinement in the average person reading them. The audience thinks they know what they like and the reality is that they can't live with it because they are unwilling to commit themselves to anything.....unless it's 'in'.Fads come and go,but design for people with poor taste is timeless.Trust me....it endures through all the fads... forever.

I put the 'keep clam' poster's in with the craze for and serious collecting of any commercial printed item.To me it's about the same as movie posters etc....graphic design.Very popular collectable for over a century now.NOT going away.Sorry folks. When an interior designer rips on these types of esthetics....just shows me what they don't know about design.Good or bad.

@Taratikusis....right on true! I live near Toronto....try and find something second hand without beating off a picker or designer around here is near impossible. The prices are outrageous to begin with.I can only imagine what they are selling it for to their clients.Especially if the client doesn't really appreciate it to begin with.Sad really.

I love interior designers for inspiration, but that's as far as it goes because manyof them turn houses into catalogs. That doesn't date well or stand up over time. The average person, wealthy or not...will accumulate random items over time.I'd like to see more designers make that work instead of 'reinventing' the wheel year after year.
When I want real design inspiration I look to set designers. They get it right every time and IN every time.Interior designers do it 'right' wrong to me.Too trendy and/or too personalized.Even worse is when they are both.Yikes! If you have style... nothing in design is DONE.Hoe presumptuous and uninspired that is to me.
I see mid century as a natural evolution from the deco craze. When deco prices went sky high...mid century became the rage because it was cheaper! LOL! The shabby chic DIY movement is not going away because it wasn't new to begin with.Every time in history has a version of it.
In my own home I use minimalism/Scandinavian for feel and proportion, bright colours because I love them and own numerous wood antiques, from many different times, because I inherited them.I wouldn't let the average designer near my home.Details are everything to me and that includes being able to live in my space.

I am perplexed by the notion some people have that builders beige can't handle colour. How does anyone go from beige to terracotta's only? It's part of the same family, but in no way is it limiting for colour choices.Think about the many different decor styles that are colourful and beige/brown terra based.
Spanish and North African design.Italian and French 'country' styles...even American adobe and Santa Fe.All are extremely colourful and beige toned right through to dark browns with vibrant colours of all kinds.I am not suggesting you theme the room,however...if you want colour in a beige tile box bathroom,...be inspired by design that is beige/browns based. Most interesting to me when considering these types of styles and colour is that they incorporate TILES! Some of the most beautiful available past and present. Many have very true colour.Reds,blues,yellows,purple....list is just endless.Too many to mention them all.

Using colour shouldn't be a problem in this room.I always prefer colour also.I wouldn't feel limited for colour by a beige tile. Then again...commentators on AT often say to match paint to neutral tile grouts. What? I disagree with that too.The room is new, clean and fresh....your starting with something nice to begin with. You just need some inspiration.I hope we get a chance to see what you do decide to do.I'm always curious to know how things turn out.

@SUZEH

I have four *5 lbs greyhounds. No problems. My shelving on the open wall starts approximately counter height and goes to the ceiling.Believe me ...the dogs are easier to accommodate around the house, including the kitchen, than the senior or the teenager.

I have open shelving in my kitchen. My counter and sink area are 7ft with a window,so there is very little there that isn't used continuously.I do wipe them daily as routine kitchen cleaning. It's not major for me.We have a island and that provides hidden storage. The entire wall across from my work area is shelving.I keep many items in bright plastic containers.Cans and packaged items disappear as used or are transferred to containers.Keeps them fresh longer.I have numerous appliances and I use vinyl covers for them. That said...when entering the kitchen you can't see any of the shelving until your in it.That helps! We also clean as we go around here.

Shelving was a budget consideration, not a style preference and inadvertently, it has made us more organized and tidier.I like the ease of finding things without having to dig into cabinets.I have a teenager and a senior citizen living in my house. Most of the design here accommodates them. One is physically challenged by age and the other is a hurricane through the house.Their lifestyle needs, day to day ,annoys me on occasion when decorating. The open shelving hasn't had any effect on the 'frat house party in a retirement home' atmosphere around my house. If we had cabinets...one would be complaining that she couldn't get to and find stuff easily enough and the other would dumps stuff any where as she used it to begin with.having wall and pantry cabinets wouldn't be here or there for me at this point.

Another thing to consider if you want colour is to use it to ground the tile and the room.

Pick your floor mat first. That anchors the room and then pick the other colour elements....like your towels and curtains.I have wool eastern style rugs all over my house. They inspire my colour choices for the rooms they are in.The eastern carpets in my upstaris bath dictated the rest of the room.Always works for me.

My downstairs bath is a solid white tile with green glass tile and almost black green floor tile.I used a neutral low pile mat in that room and the towels are matching.Pulled it together nicely. I also like to invest in small features.A beautiful light or mirror.getting started is always the hardest thing for me,so this is the way I get inspired with my decor.Including the baths.

I think neutrals and whites could be very complimentary. You could get a very spa type feeling going because there is soooo much beige tile..I love claw tubs. You could put beautiful neutral curtains around the tub,add wood blinds and and use bamboo type floor mats.Modern clean accessories. If the vanity is dating, try switching out the doors and drawer fronts. That's fairly affordable and you could easily use a builders grade slab style front. That could pull together the bland, but modern, tile job and the tub together.Depending how you balance the textiles, you could get a modern style going. If you dress up the window with fabric consider using something clear around the tub area.Dress up the tub...do less with the window.Especially if you use any colour textiles.Beige tends to match any colour if you get the right tone.I would use one long runner instead of multiple mats.I put cheap rubber no slip shelf liner under mats in my bathrooms and use any mat I like.never had problems with 'rot' from water.I don't like most rubber back bath sets.

I like eclectic and traditional decor.I tend to go towards vintage/hotel in my bathroom decor tastes. To me the tub says luxury.I would dress up the tub area.Maybe gold or silver paint the claws.Add drama with the shower curtains and tie backs.Put stain glass film on the window. No curtain if possible.Assuming you have a typical vanity.Consider some retro ceramic hardware.I would treat the tile as wall colour that can't be changed and ignore it to pursue a look that takes away their bland coldness.I'm thinking Art Nouveau luxury. That's me and not you.

The only thing I would say to anyone with this much neutral tile in a bathroom is to remember that tile traditionally was considered a top of the line feature and.until recent decades, you didn't see this much in most homes. It's never the end of the world for any bathroom when it's in good condition.Builders grade is very cheap, but there are numerous upgrade items available that are just as affordable that can transform bathrooms like this.Pick the theme and feel you want and go all the way with it.bathrooms are small and it's the most affordable room in the house to decorate and showcase.

I think this kitchen looks personalized and homey.Very inviting.Good job.

I just want to say that I am a big fan of the Armstrong tiles. They are inexpensive, easy to install and great for high traffic areas. They also can be ordered from big box stores in every neutral and colour of the rainbow. You can place them in coloured patterns and they are easy to cut for those who are very adventuresome.I did a complicated nouveau pattern in my entranceway and with high gloss wax it looks great.I couldn't afford the marble tile installation yet.Great solution for me..In my kitchen I have them in black and red, laid out in a modern pattern. So easy care and affordable. They can also be sanded if they are looking old and tired.Wax and good to go many more years. If a tile is damaged, it is easily pulled up and replaced.I know they are considered out of fashion, but with imagination and care they can be a great investment.I am so happy with them in my own home,I've often thought they may never be replaced.

@ JAXLBC- Oh my,so true.I remember teasing my parents that they should just punch a stick through the box, freeze it and use as a finger food at their next gathering.I'm eating my words today also. When I was a kid I thought the boxes were sooooo classy.NOT!Now I'm home brewing.I'm my parents and worse.

I laughed so hard. Thanks, and my sister will thank you, when I tell her about your comment.

I'm in Ontario and we have a 'wine region' located here.I didn't know the LCBO was cheaper than Quebec.I envy ,in Quebec, they are able to purchase at regular type store. We have wine shops here that only seem to carry local in my area.

.I'd be less than honest if I told you I had any preference for most Ontario region wines. They do produce many boxed wines. They are hit and miss.Same for table wines. The branding changes daily.I find that the Ontario wine region seems to have a strangle hold on innovative and cheap packaging.I don't see much here offered that isn't local produced. Most import is bottled. The prices reflect this for wines produced outside Ontario.

I would buy a boxed wine if I liked it.I'm not a snob about such things.I'd only make so many allowances for taste though. If it tastes great and the price is right...I'm sold!I've been making a Riesling at 'brew your own' and splitting the cost with my sister. We recycle the bottles through the brew shop. This isn't any fancier or expensive, for us, than buying a great wine in a box.I wish I had more ready made 'box' type goods to choose from available to me.Alcohol is very expensive here.

I love wallpaper and half baths are a great place for them.I like the examples with this post. The mistake people make when papering is thinking you just slap it up and it's good to go.That's not the case for good finish or easy removal.

I agree that removing paper can be a nightmare. If you do decide to hang papers,please.. remember to use sizing before you hang the paper. No matter how 'easy strip' and 'easy hang' the manufacturer says the paper is,without wall sizing, hanging and removing is horrible.Sizing is very affordable and applies like paint primer to the wall.Great stuff and you won't regret the extra prep and step before hanging the paper.

If you have walls with imperfections, that a paper won't hide, consider using both sizing and wall liner before hanging the paper. This will make a huge difference with the labour and look of the finished project. If you do decide to make the commitment,an expensive one for most, prep and application are key to getting the very best results and being able to change it easily later. If you do buy from a retailer, consider some serious consultation with them for technique.Or see if they can do the job correctly for you at a price you can afford. Many do and I have hired out the job twice and got discounts on supplies.
