@Michelle in GA, you make a great point: 'I hoped that there would be none of the minimum wage bashing: "Minimum wage jobs are for teens, get a better job, etc" and I'm so glad there wasn't much if any.' I think there's an unfortunate misconception that minimum wage jobs are nothing- like you barely have to be alive/awake to perform your duties- and I have found that to be far from the truth.

For example, I was recently offered the position of Aquatics Manager for a pool: training/scheduling/managing lifeguards, maintaining safety/cleanliness, scheduling/hosting special events, coaching the swim team and running swim meets, managing swim lessons, etc. It sounded perfect for me. The pay? Minimum wage.

@KayN- I should have included a link, but my original statement was correct: there are four states with a minimum wage less than the federal. According to the Department of Labor, "Federal minimum wage law supersedes state minimum wage laws where the federal minimum wage is greater than the state minimum wage." Without the federal minimum wage in place, workers in Wyoming and Georgia could be paid a shocking $5.15/hour!

@Loischild- we got our flooring at Lowe's, where the Style Selections Laminate colors range from $0.99-$1.99/square-foot. Now I can't seem to remember what color we used, but I will check next time I'm at the new house!

@confounded- Thank you for bringing that up. I didn't have a picturesque counterpoint to this, but one of the dark sides of my cute small town is that there are at least two confederate flags on display that I have to pass by regularly.

Yes, and when I honestly/accurately applied for healthcare coverage through the Marketplace, I was told I qualified for Medicaid and that my card would arrive shortly. I did not make this decision, the government did, of course!

The absurd combination of my-card-finally-arriving/being-told-I-don't-qualify is just the most recent in a long string of state government hiccups that kept many of my co-workers and I without healthcare for the past seven months.

I do work, but my job is a minimum-wage position with the local government, the vacation was a family trip I was treated to, and the wine was $4 at Trader Joe's. I have also been constantly, aggressively looking for better-paying jobs for the past year that I've lived in this small town, but so far this position is the best that I can get- and it puts me well under the wage limits for Medicaid.

I'm so grateful that Medicaid exists for all the different types of people who can't afford health care coverage for myriad reasons!

@klt108, I can't tell you the number of time's I've flown straight from or to work! It is so far from ideal, but all I could swing without paid vacation days (and without putting more of a strain on my coworkers who were filling in for me). NOT having to do that this time was like a vacation on top of a vacation!

Thanks for the many well-wishes! It seems the Medicaid program in my state has been so inundated with qualified applicants (including myself and apparently most of my fellow citizens) that it's taking months & months to get all of us signed up and registered. I have so far avoided needing medical attention (knock on wood!) but I have friends that are dealing with saving their receipts/setting up payment-plans until their Medicaid coverage begins.

Best of luck to everyone out there striving for adequate coverage- may your stair rails be sturdy and your dogs be out of the way!
