Thanks for clarifying, Kelly! I was able to attend this particular event because Kelly had contacted my friend/boss about us hosting an evening at CPS in the near future. So though neither of us had met out hosts, there was a connection. It was so fun to hear how all of the guests were connected to the hosts & each other. Some had been attending for years, while others had heard their friends talk about CPS for years and finally had a chance to attend. Thanks again!

Oops! I forgot to mention that I'm considering moving all of my stuff via Amtrak: you can ship boxes or pallets, at a flat rate of 49ยข/lb. It would be soooooooo much cheaper than renting a truck, but I'm still weighing all my options.

Stocking Up Before Moving: Perverse or Perfectly Sensible?

Thanks for the well-wishes! I have spent some serious time in rural Illinois (where I'm headed) antique malls, and they are AMAZING, with crazy-low prices. On visits I've hit two small-town/country thrift stores, and while I did score the fixings for a 6-year old's Frankenstein costume and a $1 80's bikini for myself, there wasn't anything actually wearable. But there's a college town 45 minutes away and I'm super-excited to check out the Goodwill!

Hi everyone! Please note: I didn't say anything against comfy, cotton, or cheap undies. I am in favor of all of those things- and conveniently, comfy, cotton, cheap undies are often the cutest things ever. I wrote about getting rid of things that are worn-out, saggy, raggedy, stained, old, or generally ratty. Thanks!

Here's what work-wife means to me: a coworker (of either gender, mine have just all been women) who gets you, completes you, finishes your thoughts and sentences, someone who knows your strengths and weaknesses and triggers and quirks. Someone who, when you work together, allows the two of you to be as efficient & effective as 3 or more people. Someone who makes going to work as exciting and inviting as going home, and makes the work that you do feel even more important and satisfying than it already is. I have been lucky enough to have had a few wonderful work-wives over the years (Emily & Mary, Cheri, Crystal, Leah..), and I hope I've been a decent work-wife in return.

Such a sweet story! I have had similar situations with friends pre- and post-move, and I loved that saturated together-time.

For real?! I think I've only heard it said, like, twice- Aziz Ansari said it on Parks & Recreation the other night...and I can't think of the other time. Ah, well.

@Parnassus- Outlets every two feet IS excessive, but I must admit I'm still impressed whenever a room has more than one set of outlets (our house had one set per room). I can plug things in here OR there?!?

Ha! About 2 hours after I wrote this I was on a bike ride and thought to myself, "I've read a lot of children's books, and I don't think any of them contained the word 'clitoral'- huh!".

@marfa, you are correct about Manhattan (I read that article, too) but New York's other boroughs raise the city's average to above San Francisco's. Thanks!

The endless stream of mail that can result from a charitable donation is a real issue. I get about one packed envelope per day from various organizations I've given to in the past- I guess in my eagerness to help, I failed to uncheck a box? It's annoying to think of all the labor & paper that is being wasted, but it would be especially annoying if that waste occurred as the result of a gift. If anyone has any great tips for avoiding getting donation solicitations for the rest of our lives, please share!!

I tried to make it clear that I absolutely consider a smart phone to be a luxury! A regular low-end phone would have been the purely practical option, of course, but I felt we'd have so much less to talk about if I limited this conversation to practical-but-luxurious gifts rather than just practical gifts. Please share your favorites, whether purely practical or nicer than you could have dreamed. Maybe a little old thrift store mixer for an aspiring baker, or a major KitchenAid mixer for a serious baker whose thrift store mixer finally bit the dust? Rain boots for someone who just moved to a rainy city and is job-hunting with wet feet? A dollar store stopwatch for someone training for their first marathon, or maybe a gift certificate for good running shoes? Tell all.
