Pet hair hasn't been a problem, but I did flip the glasses upside down to avoid dust settling inside.

I'm not sure what the difference is between this and the 'open air'/exposed dishes cabinet concept, when it comes to dust. I guess people just dust a lot, or give things a little rinsing before they use it?

The plexi glass idea does have my wheels turning though!

Or, you could just paint the traditional way and do that in your house :)

Thanks ya'll!

Sarita- my friend had the same problem, so she brought her stuff over to my house and we laid down flattened moving boxes in my backyard. Also, the super cheap plastic paint 'tarps' at Home Depot work great. Make sure to get at least two and drape them over anything you don't want finely misted with paint- that stuff flies and lands everywhere! So yes, if I were you, I'd find a friend with some spraypainting space and pick an afternoon to revitalize your piece.

I covered old chair cushions with old dresses I never wore. Very cute.

The checkout software is called "Delicious Library" and works on a Mac with a webcam. You literally scan each book and it automatically uploads the book title, picture, and info into the system. It will also email the borrower to remind them to bring it back to you. Yes, we are booknerdtastic. :)

Thanks so much for the comments!!

Saradan- regarding the bookshelves...

They're not actually authentic "built-ins", but they are built to fit precisely and attached to the walls with just a few L brackets.

He took the basic design concepts he learned from assembling pre-made furniture (IKEA, Target) and developed a plan that would work with the dimensions of the room. He googled a few DIY articles about types of wood (he went with white pine) and widths of cases, etc., measured the room, bought lumber, cut the lumber in our backyard with a borrowed circular saw, assembled the cases, and "mounted" them with a few brackets so that they had a little more stability, even though they really didn't need it. The shelves were hung with a Home Depot bracket and clips set, which were mounted to the sides of the cases.

The backs of the cases are open and we painted the wall behind them white so it wouldn't be noticeable.

I know that's not a very technical description, but hopefully it helps!

My apologies for the spelling/grammatical errors in my comments. With all this talk of READING, they seemed ironic. I was just excited and typing very fast! Hehe.

Oh! For those interested in the computer check-out system, it is software called "Delicious Library" and works on any Mac with a camera. Very nerdy, but super fun! ;)

And we haven't jumped on the e-book wagon yet. I personally like the feel of a book in my hand (and the smell in general), but I'm not against any technology that's encourages people to read.

Hi there! Thanks for the comments! I'll try to answer most of the questions:

Many of the books have been read, but we can't honestly say we've read ALL of them. :) The ones in the dining room are actually all Luke's- he's a bit of a collector (to say the least.) Mine are stored on the living room shelves!
Luke actually built the dining room shelves himself. He's very bummed this DIY didn't make the blurb. :)

The color in the liv room is "cinnamon spice" and I believe it is by Behr.

There are no curtains on the dining room rods because I haven't found the right ones yet. I'm planning on getting simple white ones and mostly keeping them pushed over to to the sides. Don't wanna block those windows.

Yes, it is a (thrifted) zebra print rug in liv room. And thanks!

The oval white framed mirror above bed is an antique that I inherited and painted white. Actually, all of those frames were inherited. The oval shaped mirror came from a thrift store.

Thanks again ya'll! :)

Kerri
