Apartment Therapy, I have already been questioning why I regularly visit your site. The content has become uninspiring and less and less about good design. I honestly follow AT more out of habit than anything else. An article about porn may be the last straw.

Beautiful. When I saw the "before" living room I was terrified that the "after" would have paint covering the beautiful ceiling. What a relief that the owners didn't fall for the dark=bad mindset most people fall into. Talk about a house full of character.

I recently read that the state pays the difference between what the occupant pays and what the fair market price is. In other words, if the fair market rent is $2500 and the rent control price is 55.01, the state picks up the remaining $2, 554.99. Rent control should be abolished. It's one of the many reasons New York taxes are so high. Taxpayers should not be burdened with paying rent for people who chose to live in apartments they can't afford.

LIBERTARIAN1, I totally agree. The hubris of these people to think that they are so "fascinating" that everybody else should pay their rent. And don't joke about food, clothes, and entertainment. That will be next. It doesn't matter if you've lived their your entire life. Nobody but yourself is responsible for your lifestyle. Because these people are paying a pittance (by NY standards) for their unit, the rent on the other units in the building skyrocket to make up for it.

I love painted floors. I painted my floors black, intending to add a checkered pattern, but ended up leaving them all black. I used paint that is made for porch floors, and it has held up incredibly well. It hasn't even worn off in the heavily trafficked areas over the six years its been done. The only thing that would make it better is if it was a lighter color like gray, because the black shows dust, pet hair, and scuffs really well.

Another point, rent controls RAISE the price for people in apartments that are non price controlled. Landlords need to make up what they are losing on rent controlled units, so naturally they charge more when they can.

Landlord's don't own rental properties to be charitable. They take a financial risk purchasing a property and should be able to reap the rewards. In New York, currently the ceiling is very high for what people are willing to pay. That doesn't mean it will always be that way though, and that is the risk. On top of that, property owners in NY pay exorbitant taxes so this is part of the reason they must charge such high rent. They should be able to reap the reward of their risk. There are too many regulations taking away personal freedoms. Cheap rent in Manhattan is not a right. I would love to live there, but I can't afford it, and I don't expect somebody else to subsidize my lifestyle.

What drivel. Kids' want what is fashionable among their friends, just as adults want what is fashionable. Ultimately, there is little difference between a little girl wanting a princess bedspread and her parents wanting an Aemes chair. They will grow out of their princess phase just as their parents will grow out of their mid-century modern phase. Kids should be allowed to decorate their own space as they please. Why stifle their creativity and potentially turn them off to design. "How are you all navigating these issues in your home?" Parenthood has far more important issues to be navigate. What is more important, the child being happy with the room or the parent? Kids aren't kids for long. Let them enjoy it.

DOCTORECKS Your post made me laugh. It is funny how everybody is turning up their noses at these chairs just because they are common. Some of the ugliest pieces of furniture I've seen are also the most expensive. While they are not the chair of my dreams by a long stretch, I have to admit amazement by their global domination. I've seen them in the most remote, impoverished African villages, and also in very posh posh American cities. I've always wondered about their history, and it is ironic that awards are bestowed upon modernist designers who make chairs that probably nobody will buy, but the Monobloc, which is wildly successful, is laughed at. Thankfully, I am reaching a point where I can look past the prejudices I have picked up against "common" things and see the functionality in them. Last summer while hosting an outdoor party for 50+ people I swallowed my pride and purchased a stack of these. They certainly won't show up at future smaller gatherings, but their cost, comfort, and ease of storage allowed me to have seating that otherwise would have been out of my reach. So THANK YOU MONONBLOC.

People, it is just a piece of furniture. Yes, it is important to take your time finding one that is just right. It is, after all a big investment. But don't get all touchy feely about it. remember, along with all of the above mentioned roles it has played it has also been a fart absorber, pet but wiper, and other things not appropriate for this forum.

The chairs are by Thonet. The most popular cafe chair model in need of a little tlc can be found inexpensively. However, the chairs in this kitchen were not produced in such large quantities, so they are much more expensive.

Unfortunately, the building that is the most different from the rest owns the streetscape. On a street where all of the buildings go well together except for one, the odd building is what the eye will settle on. The builders of these structures always stress that "it will create a great contrast to the other buildings." This always seems like a weak rationalization because contrast is the easiest thing to accomplish. A truly gifted designer can create a building that can stand on its own while also blending with its surroundings. I think it is not only aesthetically distasteful, but socially distasteful as well because it basically is saying the the only value the neighborhood has is as a blank canvas on which I can display my buildings.

The room had so much potential before. It is unfortunate that we have been trained to see wood in a home and automatically think "paint it all white." The room actually had fairly contemporary bones and was just a victim of bad furniture and window treatments. A carefully curated collection of furniture in a mix of materials and textures other than wood would have been much more impressive and current. The white treatment actually looks outdated and of the last decade. If white was wanted, stain that allows the grain to show through would have been much better. Now it just looks like a bland tract house.

Wow! My favorite San Francisco victorians are the ones with gold accents, so I love this. It manages to be both gaudy and classy at the same time, unlike the brightly colored ones that are just gaudy.

HOOSIERVILLE, I have, at times, not been able to buy my own food. The Occupy people, for the most part, don't seem to have financial problems based on the number of iphones and ipads all over the camp. Plus, my original point was that the Occupy cooks were complaining about the HOMELESS taking advantage of the free meals. The homeless are the real downtrodden who actually need a meal, not the people who irresponsibly took out too many loans to attend overpriced colleges.

Why don't you cover how the occupy cooks complained about the homeless taking part in their wonderful communal meals? Do you see the blatant hypocrisy there? How about the horrible condition these people have left public parks all over the country? How about the rape, theft, racism, and other shameful acts encampments have been a haven for? You can not gloss over dirty truth behind these hypocritical freeloaders by writing about their eating habits. So they eat. Big deal. So do I. The only difference is, I PAY for my own food.
