Why not just power wash once or twice a year? Otherwise why would you want to kill off the spider population that is reducing mosquitos and other pesky insects around your house?

I have a single story house. I use a telescoping pole with a rag rubber banded around the end to remove the webs, takes under an hour, uses no chemicals and does not kill the spiders.

ummm correct me if I am wrong, but I think the vivid high-color inks used in magazines have all sorts of crazy metals and chemicals, not really intended to be eaten off of....

I second the roadkill comment. Heck I will scrape up the next aesthetically pleasing roadkill I find and sell it to you for only 39.95 plus shipping, but wait there's more! For 39.95 you will get not only this aesthetically pleasing one-of-a-kind road kill but this flattened bit of road leather as well (assorted animals).

If the plastic is fairly soft you would use Vinyl dye. If it is harder plastic you can us Rit dye. Just google it and lots of tutorials and Youtube videos show up.

Dude! I love your orange (mango?) backsplash. I bought a can of orange paint to use as an accent color but I have not used it yet. It takes serious restraint to not start painting right now (7pm on a monday...)

I still don't get it.
OK it looks cool, but I don't see myself putting one in my office or kitchen. It would just be a PITA to water with it high up enough to be impressive.

how about the 2 part epoxy from famo-wood. This is the stuff folks use to pour over penny countertops. Totally waterproof. Once cleaned with rubbing alcohol it doesn't leach anything, and it should last a long time (best part of all).

I like the before better.... but I am a guy. Keep the plum curtain it is a perfect offset for the accent wall color.

While the style of the end of bed trunk/storage is not my taste I always prefer a functional storage piece over a bench. This is 'apartment therapy' not 'McMansion therapy' after all...

We purchased an innerspring mattress for our futon. Just as comfortable, and about the same price, as our regular mattress. Guests are always surprised at its comfort.

As others have pointed out. this is not the place to go cheap. Spend about 3 to 400 bucks on a decent mattress you can flip over (none of this pillow top crap). Use it for a few years then relegate it to a guest room.

This post is simply short one single statement: "in the blogosphere anything that is presented as art, is indeed art. Anything presented as 'of note' instantantly is"

Faced with daily or hourly deadlines bloggers are presented with the choice of producing no content or bad content.... most choose the later.

I automatically delete people asking for a lower price sight unseen. It is a used item. I usually include a good description and price accordingly. Come look at it, give me a fair assessment and we will go from there. If I wanted to be nagged to death and deal with 50 e-mails, confirmations and BS I would have put it on e-bay. I also negotiate better in person where I can judge a person's character, had a hand shake etc.

I wish more sellers of furniture and artwork would include dimensions in their selling posts. I can't tell from a photo if a painting is 20x30 inches or 40x60 inches, but only the first one fits on my wall. Similarly couches range from 5.5feet to 9 feet...

Now that I am in my mid-30's I feel the same way. We spent a lot of time (and money) decorating and redecorating to keep up with the latest styles through our 20's. I have come to the conclusion that the more 'in style' it is today the more 'out of style' it will be tomorrow.

For me the sensible alternative is to do as the author suggests. Buy things I love that are good quality, screw 'style' from design mags and have _my home_ reflect _my personality_.

Who am I impressing anyway? I am the one that lives there.

Style aside, all these sofas look really uncomfortable. To me if I don't want to sit on it or nap on it I don't want it in my living room.

I would hire a real plumber for the tie-in to the drain. If you have ever had a house where the dishwasher backs up into the sink you will know why. Most local codes require an air gap to prevent water from the sink drain back flowing into the dishwasher (where it siphons off and floods your whole kitchen/apartment).
For me plumbing is one of those things where I spend the money to have it done right, floods/water damage/"mold remediation" are too expensive compared to a $200 plumber bill.

Another plus to basing housing costs on just one income of a partnership is that, just like roommates, partnerships end; sometimes suddenly (death, divorce etc). Cash flow problems on top of major life change/emotional devastation is never a good thing. I keep all my living expenses (mortgage, all utilities, phone, cable, car, insurance, fuel, groceries) etc to about half a months take home. I take a nice trip every year and I am still on track to retire at 50. I don't make a lot of money (about the average income for my area), however once you get used to spending less it is easy to spend less.

Oh and it is easier to sleep at night too.

there are sheets of OSB at my local home improvement store that have a smaller chip size (like 1"x2") that I think would make an incredible floor if painted in a semi-transparent white stain. And cheap too! Less than $6 for 32sq feet! Plus the added bonus that it will easily become the subfloor if you want to put down a more traditional flooring later (like when it is time to sell). I have a carpeted spare bedroom where I have been dying to try this out.

I would be looking for a local woodworker to make one to my specs custom. $500 is a huge amount of money for a piece like this. One of our local guys that is very reasonable is:

if you cant find it, look in the auto parts store for 'spray on bedliner' it is similar except that it is a little stiffer once it sets up. I have used it on tons of stuff from bicycles to the backs of rugs to make them not slip on the floor.
