Most frequently, fruit and tea. Oranges, Asian pears, persimmons, apples, grapes, honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon. Cherries or plums. Oranges were probably the most regular on rotation. Jasmine or oolong tea. This is still what my parents serve me after meals when I visit.

The one in the top picture is called emerald? It looks more like a kelly green to me, a la Mad Men mod or retro. It's lovely!

Mini crustless quiche! Bacon, caramelized onions, and cheese are a nice combo, or mushroom and onion.

I haven't tried his recipe, but Alton Brown apparently has a wonderful hot cocoa powder mix that includes powdered milk and cayenne pepper. It's available here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/hot-cocoa-recipe/index.html. I plan to try it soon as temps drop here!

An amazing steak salad. My mother makes it all the time in the summer. Thinly sliced rare steak, thinly sliced onion sauteed enough to get the bite out, cukes, tomatoes, and ribboned Thai basil, all over a bed of leaf lettuce. The dressing contains lime juice, black pepper, fish sauce, sugar, maybe some thinly sliced Thai chiles. I'm going off of memory here.

I also use Thai basil in all my stir fries and curries, as well as in spring rolls and on all noodle soups. Tastes great in basil fried rice.

I love farmers' markets as well! I was in San Diego earlier this year, and was walking over to a restaurant with my travel buddy when we stumbled upon the outdoor mercato in Little Italy. I convinced her to eat there instead of going to the restaurant and I found it thoroughly enjoyable, even moreso than sitting at a nice restaurant to eat. I was able to get my fill and then some! Freshly squeezed blood orange juice, fresh pastries, samosas, tiny juicy strawberries... and that's without even mentioning all the samples.

hoping to wake up early enough tomorrow morning to catch some good stuff at the farmer's market, but i'm really not a morning person. i might just end up grabbing prepared food to eat on the spot instead of buying produce to cook at home. i've had a hankering for french yogurt cake and finally obtained some lemons to use so that might be on the menu for this weekend.

Birthday Cake Oreos have been at local grocery stores here for several weeks. A friend turned me on to them and ever since, I've purchased many packs to share with friends and colleagues! I have two stashed in my pantry right now. They taste and smell like funfetti frosting (read=delicious!).

I'm scared to open a pack while home alone because I don't want to eat a whole pack by myself. I've really probably only eaten 5 or 6 of them over the past month, but with a glass or two of milk, I could really go at it.

banh chung is too too time- and labor-intensive for me to make at home, especially if it's just me and i'm away from family, but i miss growing up with my grandparents making them in a huge stockpot in our backyard and seeing them pile up on the counter ready to deliver to relatives. still a favorite at my house when i can purchase them at the market. my parents buy tons during new year, eat plenty for a few weeks, and always stash some in the freezer to eat when they're no longer available.

i like it sliced at room temperature, microwaved until super hot, but fried banh chung is always the best! i've never had it with sugar, or seen it eaten that way.. i guess just not in my household. i'll have to try it that way this year, if i can convince someone to bring me a few. i wish i could get them where i'm currently located...

I'd like to start cooking with more interesting whole grains. In 2011, I started using more brown rice and barley, but also added some quinoa into my regular rotation. I have some mason jars of amaranth seeds, farro, and millet that haven't been touched yet...

I also roasted my first chicken in 2011. 2012 will be the year of learning how to butcher a chicken into pieces and how to carve a whole chicken after roasting.

I don't want to be scared of baking bread anymore. But we'll see... it's hard because I'm still living alone. Maybe I'll have to save the bread baking for 2013 :)

I bake smitten kitchen's brown butter brown sugar shorties just for myself, like Deb suggests :)

To bring to cookie swaps, I do Russian tea cakes, oatmeal/pecan/choc chip cookies, and sometimes thumbprint jam cookies. Also sometimes the chocolate crinkle cookies from Williams-Sonoma Essentials of Baking. For years, I've been putting off the earl gray tea cookies from The Kitchn... maybe I'll finally need to try those this year.

I do this all the time with sturdy, restaurant grade jelly roll pans and I've never had warping. I've baked thousands of delicious cookies on sheets that have been cooled under cold water! Haven't done it in a while, though... I acquired an additional set of pans on the cheap via craigslist and no longer have the need to rapidly cool them.

I've made these butter dips three times over the past week. Simple, fast, and delicious all three times. I served them today at a non-Easter brunch with my fave blueberry lemon jam!

The first time I made them, I had issues with rolling the wet dough in the butter, so I switched to using a silicone brush to brush the melted butter onto the top of the strips before baking, much easier. Also, when I take a tad too long to get the dough together, the butter gets nicely browned and adds an extra rich flavor.

My Vietnamese parents never drink anything with their meal unless they are at a restaurant and get their drinks first -- even then, they will drink until the food arrives, eat, then drink after the meal. We always end family dinners with hot tea, sometimes water or juice for us kids. I never realized that I picked up on the habit until I started having friends over for dinner and always forgot to serve them water with their meal. I only remember after. Now that I live on my own, I often have drinks with my meals, but sometimes I forget and then will drink a couple glasses of water after.
