I've had open shelving in the past and am in the process of renovation my kitchen, and I'll have open shelves again. I use the items in my kitchen so they don't have much of an opportunity to get dusty and greasy - and if they do, I wash them. It's adds a minute to a process every few months, maybe, but it's worth to have easy access, to enjoy the appearance of my pretty things, and to not feel boxed in in my kitchen.

Many (most?) MLS matches are available through a subscription to MLS Live. I was disappointed to not see soccer listed as one of the sports in this post. A subscription for the 2012 season is $59.99.

this was an issue before the city council in kansas city a year or two ago, and in the end, they decided that it is perfectly legal for people to grow vegetables in their front yards. they placed some limitations on growing row crops, like corn (involving placement in the yard and how much there was), and there's still some language about it needing to be tidy and subject to grass being reasonably mowed... but you're still left quite a lot of room for planting. i also learned around that time that the city has an ordinance on the books that allows for farming/gardening on unused vacant lots - so if there is, say, a vacant lot that the owner is not actively using (or perhaps maintaining?), the public has the right to plant there - for some length of time, at least.

i also live in kc, and between our car, scooters, and bikes, not much *needs* to be within walking distance. i'd call my only MUST greenspace - a good park or route to walk or dogs in, and luckily our backyard abuts gillham park. but i'm a much happier girl in a walkable area, and am pleased we're within walking distance of several bus routes, a grocery store, and all the shopping and dining of the plaza and westport.

i've bought dozens upon dozens of things on etsy and only had one bad experience, but oh boy was that experience bad. no product, no refund, and the woman finally went MIA. luckily it wasn't an expensive purchase and was literally the only remotely bad purchase i've made on etsy in years and years now.

people note that we've been building large (and building mcmansions) in the last 20 or so years, but most US cities also have a housing stock of giant old ramblers from 75-100 years ago. that's what i have - a 2500 square foot american foursquare from the mid '20s. it's a beast to clean but my husband and i do like having our own offices in addition to a guest room.

i like the lighter color a lot - and i have an even paler green in a room in my house and it really pops against clean white trim. don't worry about that at all.

i also live in kansas city, in a great big house in southmoreland. i think we're around 2500 feet? and while it's fantastic that we have a big master suite, and a guest room, and both my husband and i have offices, and many many more rooms for everything, i've felt like an incompetent asshole since we moved here two years ago. stuff piles up in my office while i use my laptop downstairs, and messes accumulate in our upstairs bedroom as i spend the bulk of my day downstairs and don't realize the basket of laundry hasn't been put away until i'm ready to climb into bed and pass out. it can remain there for a week as i continue to forget about it until i'm too pooped to do anything else. i definitely miss my old, tiny house which could be scrubbed top to bottom in an hour and everything was within sight.

And are you considering the emissions and the complex chain of events involved in manufacturing a new car? I think the answer is, there's no right answer. If we assume that the vintage Bug (or Vespa, or whatever) is a massively inefficient polluter, does that really outweigh all of the factories (and their emissions, and water usage, and petroleum usage, and other impacts), and the pollution and impact of shipping that new car to wherever you are?

Dilemma: When Vintage Is Bad for the Environment

Regarding the Vespas (my husband and I have several vintage & new), you need to determine what "better" is. We definitely have a laugh about what awful polluters the vintage ones are (that is not the case for new ones), but we're using a LOT less gasoline overall. So, our gas mileage is faaaaaabulous, but we're pumping out all kinds of crap. Depends on what "better" means.

I used binder clips and pant hangers on a few prints for awhile, but found that they started curling badly - definitely not the look I was going for. Pretty much everything gets framed at this point.

it's funny to read the assumptions, btw, about how easy it is to run to the store. several years ago i lived in downtown kansas city (a few stores have opened since), but i would have to drive 10-15 minutes to get to a store to buy sugar if i was in the middle of something. i definitely had a few neighbors in my building i'd ask about borrowing an ingredient before having to go get in my car (or take a bus for a half hour) to pick something up.

When Do You Open Your Front Door?
3/19/11 7:41 PM

huh. i live in a good-size city (no new york, but you know... a big city aside from that) in what i believe is a kind of marginal area (some believe it's not good) and i pretty much always open my door. husband home or not. there's only been one time i felt really uneasy about doing so (it was about 11 pm), but i'm glad i did - it was my across-the-street neighbor coming over to tell me about something he'd spied going on next door and to tell me he'd called the cops.

so... yeah. reckless, trusting, or sensible? you pick.

our two small (& small-ish - 10 & 25 lbs) dogs sleep in their own beds when my husband is home, but he travels for work much of the year and i'm happy to have the company of one or both of them when he's gone. it makes the bed a little less cold and lonely, and they don't take up enough space that i can't still stretch out more than when he's there!

my husband and i are on the verge of starting a similar project - basically renovating the back half of our house to have a bigger, updated kitchen. i too love a bright, clean, modern kitchen, but want to be sure that it fits in with our 1900ish house and that it preserves its resale value. please post pictures after your project! we'll need some inspiration for our own!

i'm with virtualjess - i'm not vegan, but my husband is, so i'm eating vegan 90% of the time and cooking vegan 100%, and was thrilled to see today's email. and all those look good, but... it would be nice to see some more recipes that really are uniquely vegan, rather than just some tasty simple recipes that happen to not include dairy. maybe a seitan recipe for folks who don't normally include that in their diets, so they know there is an interesting meat substitute?
