I guess my husband and I got lucky with our wedding photographer! We found someone who didn't have much of a wedding portfolio built (she had only shot weddings as a second shooter), but she had a large portfolio of pictures of children and families. We really liked her work, so we hired her for $1000 (and that included a second shooter... in the city of Chicago!) We also made sure that we had the photo rights, that way we could order our own prints in our own time frame... and could do it for a lot cheaper. We also only had them shoot for a few hours (wedding party and family pictures before the wedding, the ceremony, and some shots of the cocktail hour) since we already had a photobooth... and since neither of us really cared about photos in the first place.

Since we don't care about photos in the first place, we haven't hung any of the photos in our apartment... yet. I have a photo from the wedding day in my classroom, but that's about it. I do plan on getting a photo printed of us and the wedding party standing under the Green Line (such a cool shot!), but that's about it. I'm sure we would have more photos if we cared about that kind of stuff... but I would rather display some cool art prints in our limited wall space:)

Awww, Wheaton! I grew up near there, and now live very far away. It was nice to see something from my hometown area!

I agree with all of these! My husband and I got married almost a year ago, and a lot of the "rules to toss" are spot on. We did a "first look", because seriously, who gives a crap? We got all of the pictures out of the way, and then we were able to spend our cocktail hour actually enjoying ourselves (PS- take a 15 minute break right after the ceremony with your new spouse! It's great to take a minute to reflect on the day together. Plus, our caterer brought us a ton of appetizers; without that, we seriously would have gone hungry!

Plus ones are the bane of my existence. We only did plus ones for people with significant others, and I had a couple single friends ask if they could bring a date. We enough people decline in the RSVP, so luckily it was okay... but people need to keep it in mind that the person they bring is taking a seat away from someone else! On the other side of this, I was once invited to a wedding, and my husband (boyfriend at the time, but we had been living together over a year) wasn't included on the invite. Not a great feeling to have.

Oh, and registries on the invite? No. To be honest, we got way more checks than we did gifts at our wedding... that's always how I've seen it. Give people a gift at the shower, and then a check at the wedding.

It really depends on the breed. My greyhounds are pictured here ("Kristen's Happy Smaller Digs"), and they are the laziest dogs ever. They sleep at least 20 hours a day, and they aren't even that active when they are awake! We were in a 1200 square foot apartment more, and the dogs really haven't noticed the difference in space. They're actually much more attached to each other now than they used to be, since they don't have as many lounging options:)

Almost every apartment that I've lived in has been 100+ years old, so I know that someone probably did die in one (or all!) of them. That really doesn't bother me... it's just a fact of life. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that there was a violent death in one of my former apartments, and that really doesn't bother me either.

My mom's family owned a two flat in Chicago for a while when she was a kid, and they rented out the upstairs to a woman, her husband, and her teenage son from a previous marriage. The husband ended up killing both the woman and her son (and possibly himself) in the apartment. I think my family stayed there for a year or two after that and then left... it was just a bit too much for them to handle. Plus, as the building owners, they had to do the cleanup. I don't blame them at all for moving after that.

Most of my apartments have faced other apartments, so I've been used to this for a while. During the day, I'm usually not as concerned (most of my apartments have been far enough from other buildings that you're only visible when you're right by the window), but it is a bit more exposed at night. I always tried to just make sure that the blinds were closed if there was something that I didn't want seen.

Of course, the High Line is a different situation. I don't know about the history of it, but what I do know about is the future Bloomingdale Trail in Chicago. They've finally decided to turn it into a park, but people have been climbing up there all the time since the trains stopped running. Most of the time, it's fine, but there is some crime up there (mainly drug use, vandalism, people squatting, and noise complaints). Sure, there will be more people up there once it's turned into a park, but crime won't be quite as bad.

A Sudden Lack Of Privacy: How Do You Handle It?

I vote for sheer curtains and more usable closet storage as well! I do like the idea of getting a cedar chest and using that as storage (as well as a nice seating area), but I'm not sure if you would need more storage on top of that.

The first thing that came to my mind was getting a small, low dresser (maybe the 3 drawer malm from Ikea?) and hanging hooks on the wall to the right to hang jackets or sweaters. You might even be able to squeeze some Ikea shoe cabinets on that wall as well:)

Sorry it took me so long to answer about the dog beds! We do have dog beds, which were in the corner of the bedroom (just about where the bedroom picture was taken from, unfortunately) when the pictures were taken. We've since moved them out to the living room, just behind where the dogs were laying in the picture. The dog beds are pretty ugly, though, so we're planning on doing some kind of overhall with them this summer (either buying new ones, like this: http://www.greyhoundsonly.com/greyhounds-only-store/beds/crypton-mollyb-bed (the white and green one), or DIYing new covers for them.

Surprisingly, though, our greys enjoy laying on just the carpet, though. And one of them likes laying on the tile when it's warm out (or if it means she can get a little more sun!)

And as far as their toys go, we usually only keep 3 or 4 out at a time, with the rest in the cabinets in the living room. I think that's a good idea for any dogs, regardless of home size, since they don't get bored of their toys as easily. Plus, it stops us from buying toys all the time!

I also grew up in the suburbs, and can't even imagine going back. Sure, housing prices can be a LOT cheaper in the suburbs, but I don't mind renting until I have the money for a down payment. My husband and I (29 and 27, respectively) share one car, and are contemplating getting rid of it, since we can walk so many places in our area (we're right between Downtown Seattle and the Capitol Hill neighborhood).

Actually, greyhounds are extremely low energy, and tend to be better apartment dogs than a lot of small breeds! My greys tend to sleep about 20 hours a day, and are pretty lazy the 4 hours or so that they are awake. It's a common misconception that they're really active, but they really are couch potatoes!

I like undivided space the most, but it really depends on the floorplan. The tricky part is when you have two people sharing a studio- most people really need to have some kind of space to have some alone time when that's the case. That space can even be a kitchen or balcony, depending on the apartment.

We did! We bought an unfinished desk top from IKEA, then sanded/stained it, and then added some hairpin legs. For people who don't DIY a lot, it felt like a lot of work... but it was definitely worth it!
