Clean the bathroom and make sure it is well stocked with toilet paper, soap and a couple of hand towels.

Have a bag or bin designated for empties, easy clean up!

Buy a corkscrew, even you don't drink wine. Most people don't think to bring their own and using the oven mitt/ steak knife method can result in disaster.

Odd question: No matter what season it is, removing shoes is an automatic thing. Is this a Canadian thing? I thought everyone did that?

In Canada, decorating before November 11 (Remembrance Day) is tacky and disrespectful to the war dead. Anytime after that is fair game.

Weather stripping along the windows and the plastic seal that goes over the windows will help. I've never used the window seals before but they look simple enough!

If you're strapped for cash, I've used packing tape along the windows and it worked ok-ish.

If you have a balcony, an old towel in front of the threshold will serve as a good 'draft dodger'.

With the heaters right below the window, keep a close eye on things as it turns colder! Depending on the type of heater, you could end up with frozen pipes! (not fun...)

Experiment! Take this time to figure out your own style and take chances. Don't worry about matching.

Get crafty! It will save you tons of money. Painting, sewing and building your own things is fun (for me, at least) and if you shop around its cheaper.

Look for the potential in pieces. I once bought a wooden coffee table and side table for $15. It looked like crap but had good bones. $30 and few hours later and I had a living room I kept for 5 years. It's currently in my parents living room - it's that nice!
