I kind of like the idea of a sunken tub, but more like a Japanese soaking tub where you sit upright in it.

But this would be kind of a nightmare to clean. You'd either need a swiffer-ish extender or end up lying on your belly. No thank you.

Another vote for World's Best. We tried almost every non-clay litter, and this is by far our favorite!

Bagless, but we take the canister outside to empty it into the trash. It lets the dust disperse naturally and we don't have to deal with bags.

TV, laptops, phones, food (water bottles are fine). We allow our pets (both cats and dogs) -- they're part of the family, after all.

We don't allow guests, though. That room is only for us! We don't have kids, but if we ever do, they'll have limited access. Everyone needs a room of her own :)

If you go dark, especially grey, to the ceilings, it's going to feel like a cave, closed in and cozy. That can work, but it will feel dark and dramatic, so make sure that's what you're after!

If it's not, white or white blended with your color, like Karen suggests would retain the height and open up the feel of the space.

I alternate between Kiss My Face's Miss Treated and Pureology's hydrate series (they are also sulfate-free, vegan, and organic). They get my hair plenty clean -- and I use a lot of product, so I do require some oomph. My hair's processed, but it's silky, shiny, and healthy with these shampoos. My stylist tried to convince me to try their new line, but I'm sticking with what works!

Charities that involve some sort of activity from the person receiving the gift (like Kiva) provide a nice touch.

I'd like to see a similar post about people getting their children to behave. Dogs are often more trained than kids.

My favorite thing about this is the lack of smoke :) Someone in our neighborhood has a fire pit that gets smoke in everyone's houses, and it has caused a lot of conflict. A nice alternative!

Another Portland vote. We lived there for three years and only left because we went to graduate school.

NYC just hired the sustainability director from Portland, so in a few years, you might be lured you back east ;)

What's The Greenest US City I Can Live In?

Two of the greener options I've seen:

One couple registered for gift certificates at a local nursery, which they could do over the phone or the web. People were able to give the couple a specific plant (we gave them an azalea) or help pay for landscaping more generally.

Another couple found a local potter who agreed to make them an entire custom set of dishes, serving platters, coffee/tea servers, etc. Most people in their family contributed toward their dishes, and they then gifted their previous items to a sibling.

Just a note that the picture is about Buy Nothing Day, which is specifically aimed at countering Black Friday. I think most simple living advocates want people to realize that consumption does not produce happiness and to consume less overall, not avoid consumption altogether.

I think the reasonable position is, as you state, responsible, thoughtful consumption. And civil commenting :)
