I moved from Spain to Scotland five months ago. And I carried all my stuff with me, meaning that I just could bring the amount of luggage allowed in a plain and that was all. I was living in flat that was empty when I rented it. The immense work and even pain of having to get rid of all my furniture and 99% of my stuff made me understand how slaves we are of our possessions. And maybe I'll make the same mistakes in the future, but I'm really determined to live just with essentials from now on. Just the things that I really NEED.
Seriously, I don't know where life is going to carry me in the future and I don't want to go through that ever again. So thumbs up for empty spaces. :-)

The Case for Leaving an Empty Room in Your Home Life At Home

Alcohol blocks the body's mechanism to transform the glucogen into glucose. That's why teenagers don't have dinner before drinking and get so pissed quickly: it's a hypoglucemia. In other words, hell yeah for the carbs before bed so you don't get a hypoglucemia in your sleep. I've got a friend that cooks rice before going out and eats it just before going to bed. He's a hard drinker and he never has a hangover. Or at least that's what he wants us to believe... :-P

Your home has a feeling of widness and cozyness that I love. The Murphy bed is really cool. And th fact you don't have a couch, makes the space look bigger. I used to have a pouf too, but finally I've bought an inflatable sofa. It's not as comfortable as a real one, but I can deinflate it whenever I need more space. And it's much cheaper!!

I set the alarm clock from my phone but switch off the phone after that. The clock will work anyway but I'm not risking to receive a wrong call at 3 am. And I usually listen to a relaxing playlist I've got on Spotify and check my email, Facebook and a couple of webs for 10 or 15 minutes before turning the lights off.

I surf Flickr every now and then using the "Most interesting pics in the last 7 Days" (or whatever it's called in English, beacuse I'm from Spain). I've got a folder with all my favourite pics from there and use an application that change the wallpaper randomly every 10 minutes. That way I never get bored. :-)

I've got three of them. I don't need the thermometer at all (I honestly don't cook that much). I bought the scale when I was on a diet and now it's so useful to me because I cook for myself and I never know how many spagetthis I should boil just by looking at them, for example. Weighting them works better for me.
About the timer, yeah, I could do it with my phone, but the timer is stuck on the fridge, so I always know exactly where it is. And it was very cheap.
And about the hand mixer, I've just bought it this week because I haven't had one in months and there are some recipes I can't make without it. I suposse everyone have their basics in the kitchen depending on what they eat and how they cook it. That's all.

I have the same problem as you. I hate that bright white light from non-incandescent bulbs, but I'm also concerned about a good use of energy at my home. I've got some incandescent bulbs at my house, but for small lighting I choose halogen light, which spends much less energy and is warmer. And I've got a bedside lamp with one of this bulbs from Ikea:

These bulbs give a very warmer light than normal non-incandescent bulbs, but saving energy.
I hope I've been helpful. :-)

I try to use CFLs most of the times but their light is so cold. I use an incandescent bulb for reading, for example. I can't stand CFL's light for some things.

All those given ideas are awesome!! What I'd do to turn it on even more into a family space, would be painting both kids' and adult's table and chairs the same colour, so the children have their meals in a smaller version of the adult's dinning room. :-)

It'll look wonderful. I completely agree with Peter. I suggest a foldable table against the wall opposite to the armchair so you have space enough for a cozy pouf for your feet. I think I'd read more if I had a place like that.

I think I still decorate my beedroom like a teenager somehow. I've been living in a few shared flats for the last years and my bedroom's been my very own space, so I take care of every detail and fill it with things I like or I'm inspired by. It gotta look nice and I gotta feel very comfortable. I spend really much time in there.
A couple of years ago I even hung a big picture of a hot actor on one of my walls just because it was pretty nice seeing a handsome boy "inside" my bedroom every morning. XD

By the way, what I miss the most when I'm out of home is always my bed, with my bright coloured sheets and all my little pillows. And I miss my piano too. I don't often play it, but I feel better when I know it's right there waiting for me. :-)

@bepsf: Hi! All the things you've said are pretty right, but if you're out of your home for some days and really don't have a nice feeling when you get back, then I think you should do something with it. It's your private nest!!

I have a little blackboard in my bedroom and I write one of my favourite quotes or verses every now and then with coloured chalks.

My flatmate and I always leave our keys in a little tray in the hallway. That way, when one of us gets in, she knows if the other one's home. And that way we always know where our keys are.
But the detail that really makes me not to forget my keys when I get out is that we always lock the door from the inside when we get in or the outside when we get out. It's always locked even when we're home. So I must grab my keys to get out the flat. It's impossible for me to forget them. :-)

I live in a shared flat and, though I'm not very supersticious, once I was given a stick representing a kind of "mandala" from India which is often put on the walls to protect homes and I put it over my bedroom's door. Just in case...
