Definitely wood! Since the room begins on the long side of the existing floorboards there should be absolutely no problem creating a seamless transition. And hardwoods are so much cleaner and last forever, as opposed to carpet.

I'm amazed at how mean these comments are. I will never understand why people feel the need to criticize someone else's work in such a cruel way. Maybe it's not your style, but that's no excuse to be rude.

I agree with the first comment - I think the easiest thing is to get rid of the palm trees and rugs, as well as the green square things on the walls below the palm trees, and then paint the walls white. It would also help to clear the flowers, tissues and clock off the counter. If you're willing to invest a bit more a fresh coat of white paint on the cabinets and a clean white countertop would do wonders, but it might be easier just to negotiate price with a buyer than to put that much work into it.

I made curtains for windows like this for a friends' house and while they did the job as far as privacy and light control, the scale of them was always strange. They were like 3.5 feet wide, and I think about 16 feet tall, so they were so incredibly tall and thin, they never draped well. Have you considered plantation blinds, roman shades or honeycomb shades that would fit inside the window frames? I feel like that would be a better solution, rather than one big, long banner.

I was expecting to really hate this (because the before looks almost identical to a dresser passed down to my from my grandparents, only in much better shape), but I'm actually very impressed. What a creative and well carried out design!

The prices on granite and marble seem to be very high - we're preparing for a kitchen remodel and have priced them starting at $30 or so a square foot. The pros and cons are very helpful though!

How much soap/water do you mix? I'm probably making this more complicated than necessary but I'm very intrigued.

Good for you for taking the project on! The room has beautiful colors and materials with the wood all around and simple white fixtures. A simple medicine cabinet above the sink will do a lot and will add storage. If your parents are willing to throw in a few more bucks a vanity light above the mirror would make a huge impact and make the room very usable for getting ready.

I think the biggest impact will be to paint the walls. I don't know the colors in the rest of your house, but with all the wood tones and clean white in there a nice earthy green or blue would look great and make the room feel very peaceful and serene.

I agree that some floating shelves over the toilet would look great, and you can do this very cheaply. Home improvement stores have metal brackets you can buy for a few dollars each (or you can pay a bit more at a place like Anthropologie for more ornate ones) and then you can buy a few birch, poplar or oak boards at a home improvement store to set on the brackets. They'll age nicely with the steam, so you don't even have to stain them if you don't want.

Finally, I think a few glass bottles/vases, a rug on the floor, a towel rack and some hand towels will do a ton. You can get these things over time, and for the knick-knacky stuff you can go to estate sales or antique shops to get them for very cheap.
