This comment is a more for the person who wants to get those offline notes online.
Whitelines makes a notebook and app they call Link. You write your notes in the physical notebook and then use the app to snap a pic. From there you can email, upload to Evernote or Dropbox. They offer a few PDF samples to download, print and try. Someone could probably use those sample pages and design their own templates and create their own notebooks and note pads...

I have purchased 8 Canon printers in the past 2 years (most of them are for a fundraising event called Help-Portrait) and I've gotten most of them from Amazon because of their pricing. The most recent printer purchase was made at Best Buy because I wanted to give it as a last minute gift that day AND the service person informed me that Best Buy price matches Amazon. Granted, you still have to pay taxes, but if it's something you want ASAP, it's not a bad deal. I've price matched ink, and a hard drive too. All I do is show them the Amazon page on my phone.

I love Best Buy, it's my toy store! It's sad, but they know me by name. Yes, over the years I've spent less and less time there because of digital media and online shopping, but there are times when I want to see the product before I buy it. I'm also a sucker for loyalty programs.

We have those in our office. They are really nice. Crate & Barrel sells that. It's the Sloane Espresso Leaning Media Stand with bookcases.

I really wanted to take notes on my iPad. I haven't tried it since early this year, but I think I might give it a go again. I ran into a couple of different problems:
1. It was distracting. Not a lot of people had them and I would get questions about it and the meeting wouldn't move forward.
2. There were too many apps and they all had features I wanted in one app (cloud support, hand-rest, the ability to write and type, adding pics, and templates.)
I am intrigued by the Evernote/Moleskin collaboration and I might look into that. My trusty old note pad that I started using in '04 only has 4 pages left!

Note To Self: Pen & Paper or App?

Being a designer, I'm always looking for ways to digitally create and maintain moodboards. Currently, I'm using Dropmark to do the job. It's very similar to Pinterest, except that you can make your collections (boards) private. I'm a huge fan of Pinterest, but there are times when I'm working on a project I don't want the whole world to see. Dropmark does have the option to go public so you can share your board with a client or collaborate. It will store videos and music as well.

I recently downloaded Adobe's app titled Collage, but I haven't kicked the tires enough to recommend it.

Thanks for the shout out. Sadly, I haven't used Springpad in a while. I was finding that there were too many apps and it was becoming too complicated. That's not to say it's not a great service. I have been keeping an eye on it and it's made some nice improvements. I would still recommend it in a heartbeat, but the simplicity of Dropmark fits my workflow better. It's not as pretty as Sprindpad, but it gets the job done.

This tip isn't going to help with photos already in Instagram, but moving forward you could use If This, Then That (ifttt.com.) It's a great web service that integrates with multiple sites ranging from blogs to social networks, online storage and now home automation. I have a recipe that grabs all of my Instagram pics and puts them into Dropbox. The great thing is this happens automatically in the background so you don't have to startup a program and manually transfer the photos. I also find it useful when showing people pics of my beautiful daughter on my iPhone or iPad. I can even show pics that my wife has taken.

I don't know where you're trying to display these photos, but I have a mac media center in my living room hooked up to a hdtv. I found this app called screenstagram that is a screensaver that displays instagram pics. It looks pretty good on my tv.

I also print out some of them (mostly I've been taking older photos and applying instagram-like effects to them in photoshop), then I print them two up with a small white border on 4x6 photo paper. I have a wire hanging horizontally on my wall (bought wire that is used to hang frames) and I attached the photos using small magnets. They also sell magnetic photo rope at a few places online, but I wanted to DIY. I thought the photos looked great on the glossy paper, but you could buy matte photo paper or try resume paper. You might get some cool results.

I've been using AirPlayer for about a week and it's ok. I have had some trouble getting it to work with some of the apps, like YouTube. Using the native video player, it worked fine. I need to test more apps. Overall, I've been pleased and you can't beat the price!

I'm glad to see the people commenting that they like the physical book. I work for a publisher and we have been having a debate about whether the printed book will survive. I agree with the article that they can live in harmony.

I can see the value in both forms and in some cases I think I wouldn't mind owning both. I design book covers, so when I come across a gorgeous one, I want to have that on my shelf, but I'd prefer to read the digital version.

Personally, I wouldn't mind moving every type of book to a digital format. Cookbooks, puzzle books, art books, all of them. Although I'm a fan of going digital and I like the convenience, I'm glad that it doesn't look like print will die any time soon.

Great post! As a creative professional, I'm always looking for ways to store inspirational things. Mood boards are a great way to organize thoughts, help a non-visual client and keep me inspired. Right now I use Evernote and Springpad. I'm comfortable with Evernote and I have hundreds of notes in it. I'm new to Springpad, but it has a mood board feature built in and the app looks nice. I'm not saying one is better than the other, just throwing out the options.

I'm an Evernote fan. I don't use the software too much, but the web clipping feature gets a workout everyday. I read a lot of design blogs and I'm constantly clipping inspirational images, tuts and articles. I also keep recipes and receipts organized in notebooks.
I've been using it for a couple of years, and next year I'm planning on digging deeper. I'd like to keep all of my project notes there. The idea is to take an ipad to all of my meetings instead of a physical notebook. My department is trying to go paperless, so I can upload all my docs and notes to one place and have access to them anywhere.

I really like a lot of the ideas you're getting. There is a nice variety of creative options. I am not an interior designer. I am a graphic designer and I often try to translate the principles that I use on paper into designing space. I did a quick mock-up of an idea I had for your wall. I tried to work inside of the space you specified.

Basically, I used the Rule of Thirds as a guideline to place objects. The objects are not to scale. Here are the highlights:

1. I added two wooden shelves that match the stands that the tv sits on. I like having the option to quickly change objects on the wall. You already have pictures on the wall, so shelves are a nice addition and the items can be swapped out.
2. I like the way the orange elements pop in the room. I added a poster with orange in it to accent that.
3. There are a couple of pieces with metal on them. I added metal vases and an accent piece to compliment those.
4. I saw a round clock on the wall above a doorway, but I added another one because flip clocks look cool.

Just some ideas. Have fun!

I feel like a nerd for writing this, but I name my gadgets. It used to be a random process, either a character from a movie I'd recently watched or an 80's character. My first job out of college I worked IT and my boss (who became and friend and mentor) named his stuff after Transformers. I used to watch the cartoon, but I wasn't the biggest fan. He passed away a year after I left that company, so in his honor, I started use his naming scheme. It's fun now and I try to pick names that represent what the device does, sometime I just pick them because they sound cool! Examples are: smokescreen (tivo), metroplex (nas), jazz (music hdd), meister (backup music hdd), rewind (old ipod), blaster (new ipod), six gun (ps3), scamper (htpc), over ride (4g hotspot), & alpha prime (network). When I get a new toy I can spend 1-60 minutes looking up character list and picking the right name!
