1. De-clutter the countertops. Upgrade the coffee maker and microwave (consider an over the range style to free up counter space).

2. Upgrade the window coverings. A nice colorful patterned fabric shade over the sink window and curtains to replace the verticals.

3. Add a bold, generously sized area rug under the dining table.

4. Hang floating shelves on the blank wall by the sink. Merchandise with colorful storage and kitchenalia.

5. Lighting. Replace the small pendant over the table with a chandelier that hangs about 30-36 inches above the table. Add under cabinet lighting.

6. Add a backsplash on the wall under the cabinets. This small area wouldn't require a lot to cover and would give a big impact. I'd suggest something classic like subway tiles or penny rounds in white.

Wall sconces are great for providing lighting for defined areas, like fireplaces, alcoves and artwork. They are also period correct to the style of house you have. That said, sconces just stuck in the center of each wall like in your living room make for awkward wall decor placement and not very nice lighting. Table and floor lamps provide the intimate lighting that make a living room feel comfortable. I'd suggest two wall sconces on the wall opposite the one where you want to put the tv, spaced about a foot or so from each corner to allow placement of artwork, bookcases, or a credenza. The wall with the sofabed I'd suggest two dimmer switched outlets for table lamps at each end of the sofa. The wall where the TV is I'd get rid of the sconce.

It is... austere. Pared down to an extreme that most people, myself included, could not live in. As others have said, really good basics, just needs a layer of softness, warmth, and personal touches.

I usually have Tuesdays and Sundays (after about 12 years of always working both weekend days) and I do celebrate those days with a special breakfast. Rather than my cold cereal or oatmeal, fruit, and a single cup of coffee, I indulge myself with waffles, omelets, fresh baked muffins and a whole pot of coffee.

In as much as slate has been used for roofing for centuries, I can see why using it for an outdoor tabletop should pose an issue. One could keep it covered with a proper cover when not in use to extend it's life.

I find myself doing, most recently watched Girls first season. I don't usually watch a hole season in one sitting, but 3 or 4 episodes at once. As for the whole "Opening sequence/song" burnout thing, most DVDs chapters are edited so you can skip it.

Livingetc. Other mags try, but don't succeed at being both aspirational and accessible. Yes, it is a UK shelter magazine, but they have become much more international in the homes they feature.

I'd say all of the colors that Chelsea likes for this piece would look awesome. Deciding on which one would be based more on where she would use it and with what other furniture and textiles.
