Just read about a new LED light bulb. It looks like an incandescent bulb of the future. http://www.slate.com/id/2298444/

I'm not sure I agree with EDH. Everyone's experience is different and we don't know your personal situation. But you should realize that LA is a really tough city to establish yourself in if you don't have friends already out there. I moved out there several years ago (currently in Chicago) and had a love/hate relationship with that city. Love the city; the bs not so much. I lived in Westwood and loved living there; could easily walk to restaurants, bars, movie theaters & the grocery store. You're looking at a studio with your budget though. Traffic is the worst, and can drive you bananas. I would HIGHLY recommend not having a long commute. Although I did have a friend that lived out there when I moved, I never saw him since he lived in Burbank.

Telling us what neighborhood you love in Chicago may help your recommendations. Good Luck!!

I've tried the wave and did not like it. I felt as though I was compacting dead skin on my face rather than exfoliating.

@scruloose you're right.

sorry about that! We would always use 3500k and 100cri for offices.

Replacement For Fluorescent Light In Office?
Good Question

If you want to replace the fluorescent lamps (tubes) themselves two numbers you need to know Kelvin and CRI. They should be either 3500 K or 4200 K (that is the kelvin temperature the lower the number the more blue the light will appear, the higher the number the more yellow the light will appear) Also you should get a lamp with a CRI as close to 100 as possible. Anything above 85 is good. High CRI value shows color more accurately. You may not have good luck at home depot (most lamps I find there don't show CRI values) and have to go to a specialty lighting supplier.

You could also get fluorescent gel sleeves. As a lighting designer we always used lee filters, but I'm not sure how someone not in the trade could go about purchasing them, especially at a small quantity. http://www.leefilters.com/architectural/products/range/ref:I46C9BFA40B505/

Otherwise, I would suggest some floor lamps that reflect light off the ceiling or some table lamps with large lamp shades to diffuse the light more.

I hope this helps!

Have you thought of using the stolman system?
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/bedroom/19087/
you wouldn't have to worry about your floors as it uses tension posts.

On my honeymoon we had an open closet type system behind the bed and I would love to replicate it someday.

@Easyenough

I would only use LED under an upper shelf to highlight your hanging clothes (similar to undercabinet lighting) You will still need some sort of ambient lighting though. I would use a single incandescent source in with a diffuser in addition.

Have you thought of using rubber flooring? Based on what you've said about liking curvy design you might like the repetitive circle pattern.

Someone mentioned you should have a light floor with dark cabinets. From a lighting designer's standpoint, if your counter-tops and walls are light you could have dark cabinets and floors. It's the work surface that needs to be light to see what your doing. I tend to go more dramatic though. Also, with a wall of windows you shouldn't have a problem.

I have an amazon book list too. Yet recently I've starting using Goodreads to keep track of books I want to read. I'm also connected to friends and sometimes add books based on a book they read and rated high.

Debra Lloyd is now the woman behind Kate Spade. She's the creative director now. At first, Liz Claiborne tried to turn the company into a Claiborne type entity which didn't really work. With a new creative director, the brand looks back to Kate Spade as it was before. Therefore Kate Spade is the inspiration and sort of the woman behind the brand.

I'm not typically a wall paper person but I'm starting to reconsider. I think you could definitely add a wallpaper to the bathrooms. If you concerned about the two competing too much I would try a similar color palate to the stone in a smaller graphic pattern. I would then let the mirror, light fixtures and any pictures accessories accent on the stone/wallpaper.

On my honeymoon at the four seasons in Bora Bora we had an open changing area behind the bed and I loved it! I can't wait to buy again and do something similar. There was a 42" high cabinet with drawer/shelves backed against the bed as a headboard. On the opposite side of the wall (from the drawers) you could hang clothes, store shoes there was even a bench etc. I wish their website had photos of it.

Plus, if you ever move you could take the headboard/dresser with you.

Hi Pete - I'm not sure if you still check this but I am curious about how you made the base/canopy for the light fixture. I have a project in mind for using a similar canopy. Was it easy to bend the metal or did you use a machine. is there any structure beyond the metal, etc. questions like that. Thanks!

As an architect, my response will be a little different than those posted. One piece of advice I do have is to not rely on the design suggestions of a contractor; they approach a project from a constructing point of view while a designer comes from the stand point of a best possible solution for the end user. Actually with so many architects unemployed these days, I bet you could ask for some guidance on the cheap. Another thing, you mention adding walls and buying an apartment. Your condo/co-op may require you to have an architect provide and stamp drawings even if it isn't structural. (mine did)

During my remodel, I used cabinets from a source that contractors typically use. This advice I did receive from contractors who like to flip properties. It ended up being very reasonable for solid wood cabinets. Although I like the look of ikea cabinets, I tend to just be concerned with how they last. Depends on your goals for the apartment, how long you want to live there or if you plan on renting, etc.

Good luck and show us before and after. I really enjoy seeing them.

I would recommend carefully removing the upholstery and then using it as a pattern. If you've never re-upholstered something (I haven't) I would think deconstructing the chair would give you a good idea how to re-construct it.

Good luck!
