I should be in LA at the start of September hattyinla. send me a note and maybe we can meet up. Looking forward to seeing your house tour!

@Cayce I do teach at the ASUC art Studio at UC Berkeley. So glad to hear you enjoyed Carmen's class. She is a good friend of mine. Really amazing artist. I actually have four of her pieces in my kitchen!

@SweetCommunist: The bench is an Ikea Expedit bookshelf. I have had four people on it at one time without issue. (fingers crossed)

Hi everyone, first and foremost, thank you so much for your encouraging comments. I really, really appreciate it. I have been following AT for years and this experience has kind of blown my mind. I have to give props to my ex though, he has/had incredible style and some of the design cues were lifted directly from our old place.

To answer a few questions. I chose three shades of gray. The wall in the first image is the lightest. A door (which can can only be seen slightly in the second image) is a medium gray and the baseboard of the main room is the darkest gray. I will post the colors tonight. (I can't remember the exact names right now but I purchased the paint at Home Depot. The colors are in the Behr Premium Plus line.)

Yes, that is a projection on the wall. I have a small closet directly across from the projection (to the left of the kitchen) which I have converted into a workstation (I can remove the door very easily.) I placed one of these (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40103727) inside of the closet after seeing it featured here on AT (fits perfectly). It provides a standing desk/workstation for when I am scanning negatives, projecting movies, or just dancing around and need a home for my laptop. The projector is an Epson Powerlite 705HD projector. It's incredibly bright and has a short throw (which means a big image in small spaces) and the quality is quite amazing.

The big image is of Lewis Powell. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Powell_(assassin)) I actually used the jpeg provided via wikipedia. A little photoshop knowledge (play with the contrast a bit to make the edges appear sharper on lower res images) and some friends at Kinkos seems to go a long way. I took the rest of the photographs in the house (except for the polaroids. Those were made by a friend of mine.) @RunyonStyle Yes, my photographs are for sale through my gallery: http://www.krisgravesprojects.com/. If you want to see a larger selection of my work: www.jasonhanasik.com.

@creative license I hate the overhead light in the main room, so, I set up two smaller lights in the closet. One that you can see and the other one is, unfortunately, not in any of the images. Because the space is so small I wanted to open the closet up to make it feel larger. A third light, which is pictured, sits next to my bed on the toppled speaker. btw, thank you so much for your super kind comment. I will have to revisit Being John Malkovich. I haven't seen that movie in years and remember loving it!

@E.I.F. good luck. it will get easier. give Francis in the Lights (a new band I recently found via modern tonic) a listen. might help, might not.

@momafan I was really nervous about seating with guests. I just had my first party a few weeks ago. I had about 20 people over for a screening. A friend of mine brought various pillows. I hide chairs in a lot of places (For example, the kitchen has the four chairs for the kitchen table plus two more stashed away in various nooks. I also have two out on the fire escape. (those are folded up and strapped down for safety reasons) After the party, I realized that I loved the way the pillows made people who had never met sit closer together, etc, so, I am having a few pillows made for my next screening. I think I am going to go the route of gingham. Maybe something like this or in black and white: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=749995012&tid=gosz1r&kwid=1&ap=7

@redneckmodern, thanks, yeah, I just acquired the projector and a bluray player. The renter's insurance was immediately updated. The tenderloin is a crazy and wonderful place which never ceases to amaze me; however, the reality is that petty theft happens all the time. Thankfully, that fire escape only connects four other apartments and the alley it drops into is relatively secure. still, one never knows.

Thank you again for all of the comments!!!

and yes, the green was a stretch for me. I love it now but believe me, I wasn't convinced when the paint was drying that's for sure.
