Insulation - I'm still surprised every time I open the front door and it's colder outside than in. Turns out having windows that shut all the way and don't have gaps around the edges makes a world of difference.

Old House Habits Die Hard

I generally love having visitors, but after an endless stream of guests so far this year I am desperately craving some time and space to myself. No matter how hassle free the visit or how much I enjoy their company - and they haven't all been so pleasant and low maintenance, let me tell you - right now all I want is to be able to enjoy my morning coffee without talking to anyone, to wander naked from the bathroom to the bedroom, and play the guitar late at night without disturbing anyone (or embarrassing myself). I've never said no to a houseguesy before, but for the next few weeks, if anyone asks, I will be politely letting them know that unfortunately it's not convenient for me right now. After that I'll probably be lonely and bored and ready to appreciate company again. :)

Overnight Guests: Can You Just Say No? Reading My Tea Leaves

My family and I have been doing this for several years. For a while now we've had a tradition of getting each other something cheap and practical that represents the donation and trying to guess what it is from the symbolic gift - eg, one year I got my grandfather fishing nets for a fisherman in Laos and wrapped up a tin of tuna to go with it.

Last year, instead of making individual donations for each other and giving 'small' gifts like goats or schoolbooks, we set up a money box and all put in cash (or pledges on pieces of paper). By pooling our resources we raised enough money to buy a canoe: https://www.oxfamunwrapped.com.au/gift/185/canoe ... Everyone was really stoked to be able to afford something 'big' and it was really fun going through all the charity catalogues deciding what to buy together. :)

Washing the dishes every day was my goal for 2011, and I'm pretty proud of myself for (mostly) sticking to it. It took a while to change my attitude from "there's not that many dishes and/or I just don't feel like doing them; as long as they're not too gross I'll leave them another day" to "there's not that many dishes, I'll do them now while it's not a big job", but after 12 months it's become a new habit and I don't feel right going to bed until they're done.

Goal for 2012: don't use the couch as my extended purse! (Actually this was also a goal last year and I failed miserably, but maybe now I've got the dishes under control...)

I like what you say about respect. I always make an effort to keep things tidy when I'm in someone else's space, and I feel so much better when I do the same in my own home. Unfortunately it's a bit too easy to get sloppy when you live alone and don't have anyone else around to keep you accountable!

My list is similar. I also like to make sure I have clothes ready if I have to get up and go to work the next day.

I remember when I was a kid I used to think my mum was crazy, running around cleaning the house before we left for holidays, since we weren't going to be there anyway. Now I get it. :)

How To Make a Houseguest Welcome/Survival Kit

My list:
1) check that the stove is turned off
2) check that the taps are turned off
3) check that the garage door is locked
... can you tell I've had bad experiences with these things? :)
