Just read through all the comments and remembered something: your bedding, rug and, if you get them, curtains will have the most impact on the feel of your room. Choose something out there/fun and you'll probably be sick of it soon based on your inspiration board and anything too dark will suck out all of the little light coming into your room. Perhaps consider getting these larger items in light neutrals instead of the darker brown you've chosen and add that darker brown in other ways (pillow cases? school supplies? a great mug?).

Feedback & Advice on Dorm Room Design? Good Questions

This looks great and practical! Not surrendering to 'dorm style'/'your age' but staying true to your style is very likely not something you're going to regret: you'll feel at home sooner, take pride in spending time in your room with your friends because your room is unique and reflects your personality and will be much more economical since anything that survives dorm life can be taken to your first place off campus!

I like how you picked out a rug, curtains and small plants! Those are three things people used to compliment me on (that and a cheap Ikea floor lamp) and would be pointed out as transforming the room from looking like a dorm (i.e. making it look lived in and not depressing).

Your color scheme is indeed more sophisticated, but I've found that the bright colors of the stuff targeted for dorms looked awful and really out of place because the walls, floors and furniture of most dorms are not bright. Neutral/muted colors tended to work much much better, because the room looked more intentional. If you end up wanting something bright, just add a fun poster or some throw pillows (a little goes a long way and is also cheaper to replace).

And finally just some general advice: hold off on buying non-essentials, you're inevitably going to regret spending money on things you don't end up liking/simply won't fit in your room when you could have spent it on fun times in college, and when you have a choice, buy the smallest/most portable option of what you want as you'll be moving and storing your stuff on a regular basis for the coming four years.

Enjoy!!

Thanks AT and thanks to the commenters, reading your stories is really inspiring.

Going through something similar right now. My ex with whom I'd lived with for 4 years stayed in our old appartment, kept all the furniture we picked out together and in the arrangement I chose. Immediately after the breakup, they started bringing back new partners there. I'm happy to live somewhere else now and didn't want to take any of the shared furniture so I could make a new start. However, I still can't seem to escape the negativity because it feels like a violation of my place since it looks exactly how I decorated the place when I lived there.

I was firmly in the not divide camp, until I actually lived in a studio. I like how using some sort of divider created more diversity (I got restless from seeing both my couch and bed all the time), was cozier and created privacy when people are visiting.

If light or space is an issue, try using plants and furniture you're already using to divide sections in your studio.

I've actually done this in the past, due to an unfortunate lay-out with cramped space in the bedroom. It was way too much of a hassle though, not to have my clothes nearby when I wanted them (i.e. when getting in and out of bed/shower).

These rooms do look lovely though! I just don't know how other people are not bothered by having to run back and forth all the time.

I've always been a pretty practical person, so even when living at home I was often the one remembering that we needed extra batteries etc.

But I like the comments about a really nice pepper grinder and spare towels. These made me feel I am living like a grown-up.

That, and taxes and signing leases.

That color combination! Wow! I was expecting something very bright like turquoise & pepto pink, but this is absolutely fantastic! The furniture style, color and placement also work really well together I think. The valances are a little attention seeking though and detract my focus from the rest of the room.

I have so much trouble getting up in the morning and would really like to get into a nicer routine! My alarm goes off 1hr before I need to leave, but that still feels like I'm rushing and not having enough time to, say, prepare lunch. To be fair, it does take me at least 20 min after my alarm went off to actually get out of bed and afterwards I'm still so sluggish.

Any advice from other night owls on how to enjoy the mornings more?

@thefarmingman I agree about access. For the first time in my life, I'm living in a place where the offerings of things to do (including bars & parks) are rather limited. But it's the lack in access to these limited offers, rather than exactly what is on offer that gets me the most. City life gives me a sense of freedom, even if it is sometimes also accompanied by urban guilt.

Five Things to Completely Blow Out of Proportion (and Love While Doing It)

Your room looks very nice and well put together! It does however seems to want to please everyone instead of pleasing you.

I think that, in general, personal spaces benefit from colors that complement the natural light coming into the room, life and at least one thing that is a personal choice, not a 'safe choice'.

In your case, you might want to consider the use of a warm neutral on your wall rather than a cool neutral. I personally would choose a cream color because that seems to work well with the beautiful light in your room. But if you prefer gray, there are still plenty of options to choose from! Bring in some plants; color, life and natural shapes to complement the clean lines of your furniture all-in-one move. You are even lucky enough to have the option of choosing just one or two really large plants which would act as a sculptural element as well. The personal choice could be anything; accent colors like many have suggested or using different tones of just one color (I think turquoise or yellow could work really lovely with wat you have), (add) art that might be a bit more out there for some people but it's your space so I'd say display what you like! Displaying objects that hold emotional value for you other than because they are aesthetically pleasing in your room. Sometimes an element of 'imperfect' can make the whole come to life.

And please, consider putting your fish in a larger tank and placing him/her somewhere they can't be knocked off of...

Relaxation time = pj time. I'm so glad that after four years I've managed to convince my guy how great it feels to wear pj's rather than wearing work/day clothes around the house!

My only rules are no wearing of (too) worn out things or things that got downgraded to house-wear because I don't feel good in them (anymore). If I need to unexpectedly open the door, I'll throw on a sweater over it.

Such great timing for this article, as I'll be moving abroad tomorrow!
At the moment, having my folder with essential documents, contact info, etc. ready, is giving me peace of mind.

I agree about the towel. In addition, I always bring along a set of clean underwear, socks and t-shirt and a small bar of soap in my carry-on luggage.

I must say though, the preparation for the move is giving me much more stress than I expect the arrival will.
