Such a pragmatic idea...screenprinting art onto a cotton pillow. The results are fantastic, and the price point is smart. I like these a lot.

If you're leaning toward solid colors, I'd say get some texture or shine in there. Here are a few options:

Many upholsterers also make slipcovers. You could call a local shop and just inquire about it.

Prices will obviously vary from shop to shop, but you will be getting a custom-made slipcover that fit your furniture to a T.

Or, you could just save up a little bit and have it reupholstered in a fabric you really like!

Silver State's got a LOT of beautiful fabrics, and most of them are nanotechnology-treated. Here's an example: http://upholsteryjournalmag.com/articles/1009_np2_textural.html Search "SilverState" for more.

Also, we ran an article a while ago on nanotechnology treatments for upholstery: http://upholsteryjournalmag.com/articles/0209_f2_nano.html

Hope that helps anyone out there thinking about these options!

Nice idea using spray adhesive. Otherwise, snags and stretching would be a problem.

Indeed, natural latex foam is ridiculously expensive. There are other natural filler options, such as horsehair and kapok. Pricing for these materials depends on the supplier, but they usually cost more than regular foam too.

Another option would be to cut your losses and request regular foam but focus on using an eco-friendly fabric.

Here are some other "green" foam offerings:

Can I Use Natural Latex Foam for Furniture Upholstery?
Good Question

Don't rely on upholstery alone to tell you if a piece is antique or not. If it has been reupholstered, the customer may have asked for modern materials such as foam in place of horsehair.

Also, having a piece reupholstered does not affect the value of an antique piece.
