Hello all...wow, you guys have a lot of stories!!! I'm a private military contractor that does security for a living and here is my two cents considering that I am paid to be paranoid...LOL. First, having a dog regardless of size is great (so long as they bark), statistically people don't like to break into anything if there is a dog there. Obviously having a gun is a good idea, but just make sure you are trained for it. For close in shooting in an apt or house, a shotgun is the best with buckshot. Again training is a must. If guns aren't allowed then I'd go with OC spray that has about a 30 foot range in a cone format dispersal. Having been shot twice....I would much rather be shot again than OC'd even one more time. The amount of pain the target will feel is beyond description. Lock all your doors and windows yet also think of multiple ways of getting out of the house. For example, on the 2nd floor having a roll out ladder isn't a bad idea. Being a "dude", I can tell you that having a "man" isn't always going to help, especially if the "man" is a pansy or untrained. I'd also recommend awareness courses so you can accurately predict what could happen based on what you are aware of in your surroundings. For example if saving 5 minutes of walking by going down a dark alley is going to get you raped, then it seems like a bad idea to save 5 mins....although it is human nature to be lazy. Things like everything I mention above just the beginning. My girlfriend has a fear of someone breaking in and creeping up the stairs...so I can relate to what everyone is writing about. I've trained her to shoot (women generally shoot better than men), and have been subtly training her on awareness without her knowing it. In the end though, we all have fears....but fear is just a feeling, sort of like being cold...put a jacket on and the cold goes away.
