very mixed feelings here. as an interior designer, i like them for some things (accessories, outdoor furniture), but not others (main furniture pieces, the basics you build on top of and which express the client's own unique style). it is true they have done well making "vintage" trendy, and staying closer to the edge, and making it more accessible to the public. also true that by doing so, it makes something unique lose its uniqueness. also also true that you trade affordably trendy for quality, and definately have to fight for good customer service.....

To the studio dwellers: I had a studio "guest house" (reconverted garage) with a fireplace in it. I put my futon (which slid up to be a couch) to one side of the fireplace. Then a low table kind of in front of the fireplace/far enough over to let the futon down. Some chairs around the table. The table and chairs doubled as both sitting and dining furniture. There are lots of great low tables out there now that can serve as "cocktail/dinner/coffee tables" - a little higher than a coffee table, but lower than a regular one. Pair that with chairs that sit a little low. Another option is to put some floor pillows around the coffee table, to allow for dining.....

Love this house. Love the bedroom's blue wallpaper and orange bedding/side tables. Love the light plinth at the bath - is that the edge of the shower? I just love the casual sophistication. Love the kitchen shelves. Perfect balance of relaxed and refined.

It's really serendipitous I'm reading this today. Have been wracking my brain for a marketing direction, came up with wanting to find clients/bring to my clients what I discovered when I lived in Tuscany - similar to what you write about. I had just started to settle on the idea of workshops on "creating your own (life)style" and weaving in "sustainability" somehow. And getting excited - this is what I do, this is what I'm passionate about. Then I felt nervous - this is a down economy.....Then I picked up this blog post - and here was my answer/encouragement.....:)

Part 5 - All Good Paths Have Missions

I paid full price for my 3 year son Liam's built-in "big boy bed" which I designed for him, and for a vintage hand-woven plaid blanket for it. I'm afraid the blanket is going to be dry-clean only, too.....Says a lot about my priorities these days.....

Love the floating patio in the middle of the yard. Am wondering if we could do the same, only with a roof shelter and some screen-roller-shades to block out all those bugs down here in the South. Very inspiring!

Love this one. I've spent 10 years getting the skills down at a big design firm. And now for the last 2 1/2 years I'm onto the mission. It is validating to me, and so insightful, to hear this way of expressing it. Like you get that it's not a waste. I knew I wanted to do "big stuff" on my own someday, so I hung in there to get the experience to go with it. Will be very interested to hear what's next.....

b77 and dn, Yes, we are in Sylvan Park, Nashville. It is a prewar urban neighborhood, streets with sidewalks, the elementary school just around the corner, and the Greenway just 2 houses down. There's a little retail area with gourmet grocery shopping, restaurants, a recreation area and a golf course within walking distance. We LOVE it.....

At first I thought, "Well he's a traditional Southern boy, but very thoughtful, quirky and kind of innovative.....a bit of a stretch for apartment therapy to cover someone like him....." I've never been to Monticello, and I live in the South where people still actually go for this look - so - it was actually kind of neat to "experience" this guy personally, without knowing who he was! That was really neat, and what I love about this blog.....

I totally get this philosophy. Thank you for explaining to me why I love what you do at Apartment Therapy! As an interior designer, I get great inspiration and reminders of "what it's all about" in your blog. This is what it's all about, for me too. Creating a home is about creating a good life, or "a big life", as my husband says. It's not about what style you have, and not about how much stuff you have. It's being able to live that big life. I'll be looking forward to "the path" piece, as I am struggling to write one myself on "home as a path" too!

LOVE the Old Bell Inn in Scotland. Love the bluish-greys against the white walls. Love the soft, sensual curves and form of the chair, and the softening effect of the soft wools and the white blanket fringe. While I love modern interiors, I always want to soften it up and humanize, tangibleize it. This is a GREAT example of this! Want this....:)

Bedroom Design Ideas to Steal from Hotel Rooms

Love the bedroom. Love the closet solution. My husband and I had a white sheet "curtain" clipped to rings on an aircraft cable for a couple of years before we could build real wooden doors to close in our Home Depot wire shelving. But the dang thing didn't keep the dust out! This solution will, and looks cool, too.
