although not totally related, wax paper is great for your closets! i learned at a retail job, years ago, that it's the best thing to keep your hangers gliding nicely along metal hanging rods. just rub the hanging rod with wax paper every few months or so, and it really makes a difference when sifting through a packed closet (which is unavoidable when working in fashion!). and before i get lynch-mobbed, i suppose you could also use an old candle too!

All of the "that's not the way it's supposed to be" comments make me really sad. It seems like quite an archaic way to view things.

@IRISH_ONE In my opinion, the "institution of marriage" has been lost since the gay community was refused a simple civil right, and celebrities having 72 hour marriages became front-page news.

I hate to contribute to the *passionate* commentary here, but couldn't help myself with this one. Although, I'm really bummed to see how judgmental and critical the comments on this site have gotten in the past year. It's really changed the experience of this blog. (And yes, I'm quite aware of making myself into a hypocrite by writing this!)

your place looks great! personally, i prefer ballsy-er decorating, but understand it can be visually overwhelming for some. i would wallpaper the entire far wall with windows in the birch tree and leave the rest as is. i think it'd make the whole place feel more organic, like the outdoors is coming in!

I have this app and love it!

However, I wish it had a feature to add a photo to an item. When my father was visiting from Japan last year, I had him take me shopping at the Asian market and pick out all of my favorite items, reading the labels to make sure I was getting brands that were MSG-free and organic. I still reference the photos I took, but unfortunately, they must be stored in my Photos. It would be amazing if I could have them right in the program. This would also be helpful to remember which wines I love once I get to the liquor store!

I had a 4-cup FP, and it was fine for sauces and small batches, but when it broke (yeah!) it was the perfect time to upgrade to a larger model. I now have a 9-cup (Cuisinart) and I think the size is perfect. I mostly cook for myself, or myself and the BF. In my tiny kitchen, a 14-cup would have been too much of a commitment for my limited cabinet real estate, but the 9-cup is perfect. Hope this helps!

I love to substitute sliced avocado to make my eggs benedict meat-free. I make it at home, but it's also a good trick when dining out if the menu isn't very vegetarian friendly!

have this couch! hate it! it's synthetic (it's ikea) and poorly constructed (it's ikea). however the lines are great and it's a great size for a small apartment.

it IS a step up from the 80's black leather couch i inherited from the move-in-with-the-boyfriend, so i guess i should be grateful. baby steps.

If you find a smaller gel mat producing company, it's pretty easy to get a custom piece made. I had some made (too far long ago to remember the name of the company!) for the stylists at my salon. They had extensive options, and most weren't too ugly. I chose to have mine covered in vintage leather that I purchased, and it was still cheaper than most rugs!

However, I too have a vintage persian in my kitchen. ;)

i feel ya! i had the same problem in my last apartment. i painted the walls a rich color and hung an ornate brass chandelier... between the distracting wall color, and dramatic shadows, i was rarely bothered by the ceilings again! and my room was so romantic. ;)

It's odd, but I've found most funeral homes (in NYC at least) will let you rent/borrow folding chairs for really cheap. I have an annual 30 person dinner party in my tiny brooklyn apartment, and the funeral home in the neighborhood is happy to loan out their chairs for 24 hours for only $40. Maybe the desk girl is just happy to make some extra cash, but either way, I'll take it!
