This is my preferred pasta cooking technique because it's fast, and I don't have to run the pasta through a strainer. I've still yet to figure out how to use the starchy water for sauces, though.

Unless you know that the power source you use for rechargeable batteries is coming from a sustainable source, you're still contributing to the energy problem, no matter how minuscule a drain it may be.

Additionally, if this keyboard is $10 more than the official one, then it's $5 cheaper than the official keyboard plus the rechargeable batteries.

Also, if products like this sell well, other companies will design similar products.

You probably don't have to ditch your current keyboard and run out and buy this, but if you're in the market for a new one, this would probably be a good choice.

I've also seen a guide or two saying that using filler creates a false water line which can be harmful to the plants' root development.

I recently read about a service that provides and picks up compostable diapers.

AFAIK, feminine products are compostable, though you'll want to ensure that you either bury them deep in your pile, throughly cover them with a carbon cover material, or both.

I'm not entirely sure what feminie products are made of, but I'm informed that you'll have to pick strips of plastic out of your compost if you do this.

That's cute, but the rust will eventually spread to disintegrate the entire bench.

"Dying furniture" would be a more apt description.

Alright, did some quick Google Fu and found that the plates will typically be made from bagasse, which should compost readily. It's a "brown" (carbon) so the food scraps should balance it out. Shredding up the plates will probably be beneficial for ensuring speedy decomposition.

Cups will probably be made out of PLA which will probably take quite a while to break down, so if you put it in a home bin, you'll have to pick it out and put it in the next batch of compost for a few cycles. Again, shredding it up will probably expedite the process.

I'm in favor of the composting option.

I'm not too familiar with what exactly "compostable" dinnerware is made of, but I imagine it's a high carbon material. The trick to composting this would be balancing it out with nitrogen, which you can get from the food scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds, etc.

Meat IS compostable. The trick to preventing odors and not attracting pests is to have it properly covered with a carbon cover material. If possible, having all of the discards run through some kind of shredder would expedite the composting process.

All of my research suggests that a carbon cover material (ie saw dust) is ideal for covering any odors related to compost materials. I'm currently experimenting with shredded paper.

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that all of your crap ends up in a landfill. That or deemed as "biosolids" and ends up spread on agricultural lands along with any other chemicals and heavy metals present in the treated sewage.

Sorry if I'm coming off as preachy, but this is something I'm very passionate about.

All of these efforts to make the flush toilet more eco-friendly are really just stop-gap, band-aid solutions.

The best bet would be to get rid of the flush toilet altogether. When you really think about it, what we're doing is taking clean, drinkable water and literally crapping in it. Then we're using more clean, drinkable water to flush it into pipes that carry it all to a treatment plant, where energy and resources are utlized to clean out the crap we put into the clean water.

What we end up with is water that's been heavily chemically treated going out into the waterways and ending up back in our tap.

Composting toilet systems are the way to go.

It's a pretty big adjustment to be sure, and I have yet to make the change myself, but I'm hoping to see the day where I'll never have to crap in a bowl of drinking water.

Need more tech specs. My mom is allergic to the spectrum emitted by CFLs, so they're not an option in my parents' house. They claim this gives off different light. If that's true, they might be a viable alternative.

I think I'll probably be leaning toward LEDs, though.
