I was in the market for a better vacuum and thought that Meile was out of my budget so decided to get Dyson. Bought the compact ball model (DC24) -- got it home and it was defective!! The brush didn't turn and the customer service person said to take it back and get a new one. The Target near my house took it back, but doesn't stock it, so I was going to have to wait for another trip to LI or order on-line. In the meantime, I borrowed my downstairs neighbors Meile (melon yellow compact canister). I loved it (like buy it flowers and ask for its hand in marriage, love)! It was so quiet it didn't freak my cats out. It worked great on all their fur -- even on my thick area rug, although most of my apt. is wood floors. It felt much better than the Dyson did. I basically resigned myself to figuring out how to afford one no matter what I had to give up for a while. I was shocked when I could get the basic compact canister for the same price as the Dyson. I decided to order the Antares to get the extra attachments and I can't wait for it to arrive.

I have the world's cheapest landlord...but I have lived in my apt. for a long time and when the kitchen cabinets started crumbling (they were pressed wood from the '70s) I decided to negotiate. It wasn't all that tense actually ... he covered 2/3s of the new kitchen cabinets and countertops. I covered 1/3 and negotiated a new lease with an increase consistent with historical increases at the same time to make sure he didn't try to recoup his portion in my lease the next year.

I bought these and used them to cover the front of the freezer door on my fridge -- love them! They went on easy, they are easy to write on and get completely clean. I've had them since Sept. and they are sticking well. Really good product.

I signed up as well even though I'm not doing a "by the book" cure. I did the cure previously (Fall '06, I think), and am happy to report that for the most part it stuck and I have cured problem areas in my apt. on an as needed basis. So like many others I have a hybrid cure in mind 1) taking care of all of those little fix-it items (hand some photos, paint the bathroom) that get pushed to the bottom of my to-do list because no one really knows about them but me; 2) incorporating more eco-consciousness into my apt. I rent, so some bigger issues like a more energy efficient fridge might get passed over, but I'm going to try to make up in other areas; and 3) spending time to learn how to use and being more appreciative of the space and things I have -- like the great camera my mom bought me in the fall that I still have not spent time figuring out and the new photo printer I bought that is in the plastic wrap still....

And the closet cure is a brilliant idea!

They re-did a small sofa for me a few years ago and the work was good, but the communication was awful and it took 3 follow-up visits to get my pillows (which they denied I'd dropped off but which I had them list on my receipt, so in the end they made me new ones) and they "couldn't find" my leftover fabric. And it was not really a big enough bargain to make up for all of the hassle.

Hi - I was wondering if anyone has seen a wall-mounted version of the popular spine style book cases like those available from DWR, CB2 and West Elm. I saw a horizontal version in Chiasso catalog (I think), but my space needs a vertical mount. Thanks for info you have!

I just read and loved My Life in France...am currently reading and liking Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant. I really want to read Judith Jones' biography The Eighth Muse, so that gets my vote.

I have the envirosax and love them too -- got the botanical prints from vitamin desgin. I get compliments on them all the time which is a nice perk in addition to cutting down on plastic bags.

I second your affection for the Little Green Machine. I am going to be using mine for maintenance cleaing of my living room furniture this weekend in preparation for holiday company. I also have the steam mop (which was also just redesigned) which I love because it is just water and no chemicals on the floor for my pets and kids that visit my home.

I am a big fan of Atrium white -- used in my baths and kitchen and for all trim in my apt. It has matched well with everything from the tan in my living room to the persimmon in my dining room to the bamboo green in my bedroom.

My upstairs neighbor used decorator white when she had her apt. repainted last year and had a ton left over. So, in an effort to save $ on repainting my office/guest room which desperately needed it, I borrowed some last weekend and painted. The thing I noticed right away (as did my friend who was helping me) is that it has a decidedly blue-ish cast to it. It was fine with me, but just putting it out there.

patrick (the other one) -- I agree about using 2 solutions and need to just figure out which 2. I would like a bigger table top and ideally room underneath for my basket of ready to read books for "my side". The other side really just needs room for a lamp (I have two of the one in the photo), so garden stool option ideal on that side.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

patrick (the other one), ceramic stool was on my original list, but I have cats (bad ones) and feel it is pretty likely that they will knock it down and break it - only one, right after the model is discontinued, that is how bad they are. I am thinking of the white concave drum stool at West Elm because it is wood with a similar look.

Max Othermoxx, love the locker look but over budget (to which I am clinging)...but am adding benjamin sanded and painted (thanks circlebloom!) to the mix of ideas.
