and maybe some good local spices like nutmeg, whole green peppercorn, and curry powder.

What Should I Buy for the Kitchen on My Trip to Thailand?Good Questions

I wouldnt waste my time with fish sauce, curry pastes, and chilli sauces. Those can be found just about everywhere these days (depending on where you live of course). Instead, try to find some snack foods and drinks to bring back that you cant find here. But ya, not too sure about customs though...

@Fulinlin: Not necessarily. It would be fallacious to presume that all vegetarians also eat eggs. Ovo/Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians do of course, but not all vegetarians. And just because you don’t eat dairy or eggs, doesn’t necessarily make you a vegan either.

@Fulinlin - I'm Thai American, so I felt inclined to plug my heritage's cuisine! And oh ya RIGHT, coconut milk is in EVERY single Thai dish. Come on.

Heat - Thai food is well known for being spicy (nam prik pla, curry, etc).
Acid - Again, lots of lime and other citrus in Thai food.
Herbs - Again, lots of herbs (cilantro, thai basil, mint, etc) in Thai food.
Char - Lots of grilling (Gai Yang, moo yang, etc) in Thai food.
Salt - Once again, Thai food is salty (soy sauce, fish sauce, shrimp paste, etc)

All are present in abundance in Thai food (and other SE Asian cuisine), not to mention Thai food is extremely delicious AND nutritious.

But please be careful if your potatoes turn green. DO NOT eat them if this happens. The green itself is actually just chlorophyll, but its presence indicates a high concentration of solanine, a toxic alkaloid.

@discerning - Negative feedback is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes honesty IS the best policy. For example, wouldnt you want your friends to tell you if your outfit looks ridiculous? Or would you rather they lie to you, tell you its great because they dont want to hurt your feelings, and have you walk around looking silly the entire day?
