One of our clients wanted to do a white subway tile recently so we got samples of the glossy and the matte. The matte actually shows less finger prints than the glossy does. I just tested it after I put lotion on my hands. I think the matte is pretty. It has almost an opalescence to it, so it's not completely flat. We got our samples from Daltile.

I would avoid putting the sink in front of a low window. Depending on how low it is, it might be hard to run the plumbing there and you need to be able to open the windows. I would go with a galley style kitchen like suggested by HELLCAT in the first comment.

What happened to the range hood? If you cook at all, you need some type of ventilation.
By code, in the U.S. at least, you have to have some form of ventilation for any cooking surface indoors. Also, by code, you need at least 30" of space above the cooking surface to any combustible material. A typical backsplash is 18" high, so judging from the photo, those shelves are too close to the burners. Unless they are metal shelves, this is very dangerous. I'm looking back and it was not to code in the before picture either. I love diy projects and I think the look of the kitchen turned out great, especially on a budget. But sometimes, if you don't have all the information you could be creating dangerous situations in your home. The fact that a designer worked on this project kind of scares me. I'm sure Europe has different codes for remodeling, but I still think it's unsafe.

I have been doing high end kitchen design for almost 10 years and yes, the majority of those "designer kitchens" never get used. It's sad really. We have clients that will completely gut a perfectly good kitchen, one that most A.T. readers would die for, just because they are sick of it and want something new. I would honestly say that 99% of our clients will never cook in their "designer kitchen", even though it has all the high end appliances and super functional internal accessories. It is a status symbol to them and nothing more. Clients ask me what I have in my kitchen, ha, I live in an apartment and don't even have a dishwasher or a functioning hood.

When I was in college, I interned at a furniture store and they actually teach the "karate chop method" for staging pillows in the showroom. That was one of my jobs, to go around and karate chop all the pillows. I guess more proof that the technique makes your home look like a showroom.

P.S. I have never felt the need to do this at my home.

This is all very interesting to me. I'm rethinking where I keep my hamper now. I have a nice looking one in the bedroom, but maybe the bathroom is a better place. Hmmm....I'm glad I read this post.

My scenario is completely opposite of the study then. My fiance sleeps on the right and loves his job and is usually more calm. I sleep on the left, I hate my job, and I make more money.
