I agree with the previous comments. Also, the trim around the door is too dark and doesn't go with anything else. Paint it white, and consider doing the same with the baseboards.

If it's a 50-year-old junker that you barely use, then why the hell not camouflage it. If it's precious to you in any way, show that sucker off!

My office has a few plum/eggplant accessories, but that's it. My favorite color, but I've come a long way since my lavender bedroom (walls, ceilings, and trim) of my childhood. A little goes a long way.

Hmm. 3 things come to mind: Vinyl self-stick tile over the existing tile, which can be peeled off when you move out. Scour Craigslist and Goodwill for a fire screen.
Or just say Eff it, and put a short bookcase on that spot.

My aunt bought a bunch of stuff from this company - chairs, tables, side tables, planters, everything. This stuff is not your typical plastic furniture - it is HEAVY, so it will never blow over or move with the wind. I would consider it patio furniture that can be handed down generations, since it is pretty indestructible.

Of course this article comes up the same day my mom gashes her index finger on a glass while doing dishes. Six stitches. She would tell you herself, but typing is challenging right now.

Yuck to the piano. It probably sounds like crap, that's why the original owners probably painted it turquoise; because it didn't matter. Nobody would do that to a Steinway.

Love it. Give her a hand! ;)

(Also, it would be an awesome reference if she incorporated a seal somewhere in that room.) :)

I think Centsational Girl did a post on this a couple of months ago... lemme see if I can find it...

Here we go! http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/11/my-25-essential-diy-tools/
It's 25, though, not 10, and they're pretty much all carpentry tools. I would add a decent sewing machine and iron/board.

In the kitchen, I have a giant empty 8-lb. can of Hershey's syrup from an old workplace that I use as a bank. The best part is the security. Nobody realizes that it's actually filled with moola...

The front window of my apartment is almost exactly the same. It's 11 feet across, but the longest curtain rod I could find was 10 feet, so I got a round dowel from Home Depot to extend it a bit further. I used 5 sheer cream panels to the floor, for privacy, yet to let light in. (I should have used 6. I'll get another one after I have my Xmas money.) The panels themselves are patterned, too, because I hate the mosquito-netting look of plain ones. Then I put holdbacks on the sides for when I want to open the side windows in warmer weather.
Good luck!

Absolutely! My fella and I get cookbooks from the library all the time. I photocopy my favorites into a binder, he handwrites his favorites into a notebook, and as we try them, we write in changes to the quantities, temperatures, timings, etc. My question is, why WOULDN'T you want to write on your favorite recipes and make it your own?

Love the color palette! It's hard to cultivate style while being thrifty and dealing with existing tile/countertops/carpeting. This is where REAL people live!

The worst is when people use their snowblowers to shoot the snow back onto the street, and at passing cars, usually mine. Snow/ice chunks shooting out at my car? I kill your face. Why can't you shoot the snow onto your own lawn?
