So calming. So comforting. And isn't that what a home should be? What a fantabulous nesting place. Great work...and thank you for sharing.

Minimalism rules! No "pops of color" even allowed for me. Color must be pale, subtle and in the same palette. No contrasts -- they take too much energy. When in doubt, go white. Want my environment to soothe me.

Or...give them something that will give them a sense of pride -- a donation in their name to someone who really needs it. There are tons of charities who will do that; I like Heifer.org.

I would suggest using nature and nature-related accessories as decor to soften the graphic nature of the grout lines -- a plant or two, seashells, a shower curtain with ocean waves or, say, ferns on the print and window curtains to coordinate, but not match. A seashell-framed mirror. Nice basket under the sink (fill with towels). Either a sand color or a pale green on the walls. Keep it all light colored to give an airy, expanded look.

We've been looking for a pale sea glass color for a bathroom and love the swathe in the picture. Can you tell us it's name and manufacturer?

There's even more to it. In the midst of a miserable divorce, I thought I was saving precious energy by skipping making my bed. Then I read an article on divorce and sadness that mentioned how many people quit making their beds. The article made the point that making your bed starts you off in your day with a sense of control and accomplishment that energizes you to go on to other mini-points of control and accomplishment in your day. It worked for me and I recommend it for others.

Love it all. Streamlined furnishing is great for renting and I, for one, think your mother's furniture works fine for renting. Yes, if you were going to live there yourselves, you would have chosen differently...but this all looks so clean, simple, welcoming now. I would have voted to keep the flamboyant green wallpaper on either the walls OR the ceiling, but you have plenty of time to make changes in the future, too.

Thank you so much for sharing this experience.

I'm a granny and if that's what's you call your grandmother (whose room this is), who can object to identifying this room. I, for one, love it. Like the neatness (research shows it is UNstressifying) and lining up the shelving. You could put any color you love behind the shelves.

Like the clean, fresh, readable, uncluttered look. The white gives you a nice background for whatever you run.

I can't remember liking any place as well as this one. You really have the eye. And you make a great case for not having a TV...it makes all the difference here. It all works so perfectly together that it's hard to pick my faves - certainly the Louis chairs and the all-white bedroom, but neatness counts a lot for those, like me, who tend toward minimalism.

Any kitchen tips you learned from your tiny one? Not many pix here.

Did you put the riser in for the dining area? It, plus the see through fencing divide the room beautifully without sacrificing actual or visual space.

Thanks for this core list, which we can each adjust to our own needs. Personally, I do like to keep the kitchen clean (and ant-free), cleaning counters (those anti-bacterial wipes make it easy) and washing dishes as used. I like Michelou and her husband's plan to set a timer for a 10 minute limit and get done what you can. Also, thanks to Mrs. Mouse for letting us know about the iPhone app that does all this planning and lets you personalize it.

Learned so much from this piece and from Amanda. Skip the colorful doodads available for kitchens and stick with simple, fresh and clean.

In some photos the cabinets look white and in some they look as if they are painted that lovely neutral Old Prairie shade (that perhaps has an ever-so-slight amount of green in it?). Can you clarify?

I'm a grandmother and can only dream that my granddaughter might one day honor me as you have honored both of yours.

Oh my. I love Turkey and you captured its beauty, mystery and history SO well. Weren't you blown away by the huge amounts of saffron in the markets? It's so expensive here in the U.S. Many thanks.
