We're about to use ours for the first time with a direct flight to Hawaii with our 15 month old (yes, we're that crazy.) Wish us luck!

I also have to weigh in on the Homedics cheapy version. It's probably one of our best purchases -- we even travel with it, because you never know what noises you'll encounter at another home or hotel.

It's held up really well, and was less than $20 at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Has MANY options -- our guy loves the rainfall sound!

Courtny --
You will make my MONTH (at least!) if you donate one of your extras! (and congrats on the hitching!)
And I'm glad you found the blog and liked...I hope it gets more interesting when I actually start residency in July. So far, it seems to have worked out well, med-school baby and all!...I am in the NYC area...ok to email you at your blog? Or feel free to email me via my blog (jripton at gmail dot com) -- I will definitely buy you a coffee for a free lantern!

Courtney -- I also know several people that were able to make a completely fine sleeping area for a baby the way that you are planning; you will be able to ventilate it. And you totally have the right attitude about being flexible/willing to change things up! It never goes exactly as you plan with a little one, sigh...

sounds like we are/were somewhat in the same boat. I had my son right before graduating med school (15 months ago), took a year off, and am now a resident...

anyway, ahem, back to design...mind if I ask where you got the beautiful blue shade in your living area? Been looking for something like that...

Wow, just yesterday I was thinking of posting this same comment. I would also love some suggestions for outdoor equipment that is fun but not hideous.

These sections of the book are interesting to me, and I definitely have to agree with the author that "parents may recognize familiar aspects of their child in both chapters". I'm assuming the authors would agree that children may not fit directly into a category; I'm having a hard time fitting my 14-month-old into one! So far he really seems to be a perfect cross between a slow-to-warm toddler and an active one (um, with a little bit of difficult thrown in). I find that he is an active toddler that also really wants his mom or dad to be near him whatever he is doing. So it is difficult for me to take the advice that "active children probably need their autonomy...Less active children may feel supported by the parent's help." Jack wants to run around and explore like a maniac, but he really wants me by his side, it seems.

Do other parents find it hard to categorize their children in these groupings, or are these categories generally spot on?

Yeah, the first one looks great, but with a newborn or smaller baby I'm wondering if you need more support -- you'd definitely need something else under the baby.

And that second one...what do you use that for?

I also found Ch. 3 to be very useful. Ch. 4 was interesting (I haven't read any other behavior books, thanks for the recommendations, genxmom) but I found that my toddler doesn't quite fit any of the categories. I imagine this is the case for a majority of parents...or maybe not?

I'm enjoying the book so far (am I the only one enjoying it??). I've read a little bit more ahead; the tone of the author was a little off-putting at first, but I really started to like it more in the second chapter. I personally think the vignettes are hilarious.

And I have very much tried to think a little bit more when my 13-month-old starts getting angry when he doesn't get his way. It must seem very illogical to him that he can play with the plastic up but not mom's plastic cup with liquid in it. I am surprised that he is already so vehement and throws mini-tantrums already! When he's upset, he does what I call the "full collapse" -- first throws his head back with a pained expression, followed by going completely limp and collapsing to the floor. He doesn't scream, but lets us know that he's upset. Do other parents find this to be the case in kids this young??? I totally thought I wouldn't be using any tips from this book for at the earliest 6 months from now!

I am also constantly looking for bright, active wooden toys. However, my son kind of frustrates me at every step -- I have to admit that the toys I find SO ugly (and unsafe -- all plastic!) are the ones he goes crazy for. He has a room full of expensive European wooden toys and I can't tear him away from the Fisher Price junk he gets from relatives...sigh, I have to agree with genxmom. It's been a losing battle for me but I'm kind of loving the Parents Busy Zoo
