USB has 4 pins/wires.
2 are used for power, 2 for data.

On most devices ad old iPhones they do exactly as above. 5v on the power pins.

On the iPhone 4 and above, it runs a 2.4v current over the data (dunno why).

So when it says it's not supported, it's be because the charger doesn't have this 2.4v rail

At the end of the day, the new Macbook Air is just a laptop (or netbook maybe).
I think it's hard to compare it directly to an iPad, which is a completely different product.

My desk is an original Jerker from Ikea. 120x90cm (about 4x3 feet).

It's got enough room for my 20" iMac and another 20" screen for my pc. 2 Ikea Helmer units sit underneath it for storage, plus the 2 shelves above the screens for my printer, speakers etc.

Attached to one vertical beam is a 15" monitor and on the other side is a tv mount for my TV.

The work surface is wood with a melamine finish, so it's easily wiped clean.
