I'd be tempted to not only hang them as stated before - above the window - but also extend it out further than 10" on either side. I'd aim for the distance half way between the window and the wall (on the right). A sturdy iron bar with impressive ends will compliment your exposed beams nicely. Make sure to get more drapes than you need to cover the space. Lots of white fabric (easy guideline: 1.5-2x the width of the length covered) will keep everything airy, regardless of the actual volume of fabric. Having more fabric than you need will make it look rich. For a custom look, you could sew a colorful 6" band of fabric to the bottom of the white curtains to give it a little bit of an anchor.

And although you didn't ask, I would consider bringing your art closer together over the couch. You have it evenly spaced across the wall. I prefer having a little more space on either end of the set than the spacing between each picture. (It could just be an optical illusion from the photo)

Curtains for Light, Airy Look in Living Room? Good Questions

Although I love the look of dark grout, I just couldn't handle it in my kitchen. The reason is this: I would need a very precise tile person who pays very close attention to spacing. The light grout covers up the irregularities in tile spacing while the dark only accentuates it.

Pros & Cons: Dark Grout in the Bathroom

Sorry to say, but I'm not a fan of the white-on-white. What about keeping your boring green shutters and adding the purple door? That'd be fun...

Ok. Tiles - I like... BUT not in your kitchen. There's too much going on. The pink countertops are clearly the part that stands out. The tiles compete rather than compliment. I'm sorry to say that I don't really have any advice to offer though... I'm racking my brain trying to figure out an inexpensive alternative (because you are in a rental after all) Are there any hand-made tiles available in your area? Perhaps some street vendor somewhere?

I like the grey of the cabinets - Its a great improvement over your original pictures!

Is This Backsplash Makeover Worth the Effort?

in the third-to-last picture (I think) there are sheets of music hung in a box. I'm curious to know why they're important, and why they're displayed in this manner. It looks like they've been put to braille... Am I wrong?

Yes! And maybe look into some new handles for your doors (assuming you don't like the ones you have... I can only guess that they're the originals). New handles make a world of difference!

Ok it's maybe not "essential" but I think every bedroom needs a chair! A visually interesting, semi-comfortable, "I'm too tired to put this jacket away so I'll just throw it on this convinient chair" chair.
With a cute pillow. Of course. :)

Don't invest too much into this! It's JUST a rental, and not yours to keep! Invest in things you like (and can take with you) and ignore the countertops. Who cares if they're pink? From the sounds of it, you won't be there that long anyway.

If you're really all that worried about it, I'd change the knobs on the cabinets. Embrace the pink and get some funky rugs. (Prayer rugs from Saudi Arabia could be a cool take-home souvenir... Please excuse my ignorance if you're not actually supposed to walk on prayer rugs...) Draw the attention away from the countertop color with other stuff on the countertops - cook books, plants, kitchen utensils. Paint the cabinets a bright white so they don't look quite so dingy against the white appliances. Paint the walls a rich/pinky beige to tie it all together.

Although I somewhat agree with Aaliyah, we tend to live in rental apartments in the US, too, and we like to make them pretty. An apartment isn't defined by it's size.

Help! Ugly Rental Kitchen Needs a Budget Makeover

Homeowners association/condo fees! If you're at the top end of your pricepoint, the extra $XXX in fees every month may put you over the top. I almost bought (what seemed to be) a pretty cheap condo until I realized the monthly ownership fees nearly doubled my monthly payment! Eep! Wow am I glad someone told me to ask about that!

10 Things To Check Before You Buy A Home
8/9/10 4:51 PM

I have a long list of things I'd love to know! (Some duplicates from above)
-how the yellow bathroom sink meets the floor
-how the downstairs bath connects to the rest of the house. (It looks like it used to have a door into the kitchen that was closed.)
-style/brand of couch - love the red!
-closet doors? where'd they come from?

I love that you've taken an older style house and mixed with contemporary flare. It's lovely!
Kudos to you for all your hard work. It shows.

Are you keeping the appliances? I would think hard about what looks good with your white appliances/new ones. White on white on white may get a little overwhelming. You could always go funky and do a strange color like red or turquoise (as mentioned above) but that would definitely need to be in keeping with the rest of your condo! I think because you live in a non-traditional place (Not mainland), you could really go wild with color and have it be totally appropriate.

Although, the classic fallback does seem to be white. Be careful with your countertop colors as well!

I was having the same problem! I finally just decided to go with white. I figured it was hard to go wrong with that...
I'm not sure I like the result though.
I have pictures of the white grout and without grout, which gives a grey effect. Email me and I'll send you the pictures!
