LED lights are closer to incandesant bulbs than CFLs. Next time I need light bulbs I'm going LED. 1)use a lot less energy than CFLs 2) better light than CFLs 3)longest life of any available 4)they don't have the same uber-toxic chemicals that CFLs have.

Skip the CFLs, go LED.

For my boyfriend and I, it's just not worth it. We don't have TV so that we don't waste our time watching it. Yet, with the streaming and DVDs that is exactly what we end up doing. Time to cut our loses and get back to reading at night. If we want to watch a good movie? The library it is!

Make a master plan, then break it down to be one at a time. It can be as simple as the entryway, then a headboard that they love. The baby steps will help make it less daunting to all the change. Make sure what you put in the space are pieces that really make them happy. I'm a huge supporter of multifunctional good looking pieces. Take the time to plan out the spaces, know what works what doesn't for that space, etc. Have fun!

Natural fibers are fantasitc, but cotton is suseptible to tons of different pest and as a result is on of the most sprayed crops in America! Something to keep in mind. Not sure of a better alternitive yet. Still doing my research. :-)

I was interduced to this program by my tech loving boyfirend. I constanly had pieces of paper all over or my computer desktop was completely covered. I've got to say, I LOVE IT! I don't use it for secure documents but for keeping track of design ideas (I'm an interior designer) to use for current or future projects it is working wonderfully. I espcally love the ability to tag the image and have a link built into the 'note'.

I love it! As a broke interior design student I've thought about doing something simular to this a number of times. For now I use old table cloths and curtains for furniture covers and look forward to the day I can at least afford a sewing machine!

I know this is a slightly random question, but how did you get the clock on your mac in the above photo?! I just got one for Christmas and wanted to do just that!

I love your chalkboard wall as well.

I'm a shoes off at the door person. It's just what you do here in Hawaii. One of the socially accepted norms really. It's considered rude to not remove your shoes at the door. Plus, we're usually wearing slippahs anyways!

Well said PhoebeArt. SoRad, its all more marketing, but isn't it better to have it going in this direction than the opposite?

As for me, I'm almost 25 and living with my boyfriend on a combined salary of a little less than 40,000. Soon I'll be going back to school so there goes 25,000. I find myself walking a new and interesting line. How the heck do we survive on 15,000? I think that I'm fairly well equipped for going without and I love to bake. But at times the cost of ingredients are more than buying the items!

I grew up in a era where materialism was at a feverish pitch and "I want that, I need that, give to me NOW" was a familiar refrain. I like to think that I'm on the less materialistic side of the spectrum for my generation. I didn't grow up with parents that were able to throw me whatever I wanted. I learned to be patient and look for items that were going to last me more than the season. But I still find myself vulnerable to the pull of having things immediately (clothes are a very good example and I'm a sucker for a good pair of shoes).

So now, I find myself wobbling between radical homemaker and materialistic queen. How far can or should I go at this point in my life with more than limited means. My boyfriend and I are currently working on finding a good whole wheat bread dough recipe. We already don't have cable, hang dry our clothes, have one car we only use for errands (I take the bus for now, until I go back to school at which point I'll switch to biking) and make or scrounge up a lot of our furniture. For us, Craigslist is a part of daily life.

Two ideas that can easily be combined: That teal blue would be amazing from the painting. Then to keep it light but add texture and depth try a worn plaster paint technique (think buildings of Europe, mostly white with hints of blue, pink and yellow). I think the contrast between the "textured" walls and your smooth modern furniture would add a whole other visual dimension to the room.
My friend did this technique in her place and it looks phenomenal. It adds subtle color and texture while making everything else in the room look better. It took some time to paint but it's well worth the wait.

I would do an accent wall with the teal blue (but wouldn't put the rose painting on the same wall, I think it would blend in too much) and do the paint technique on the others.

As a side note, the two black and whites would look nice spaced out a bit more, maybe add in a third and or put them more over something, like the chairs. They are currently getting lost hanging out together in the corner. Good luck and I hope we can see the finished product! You're off to a great start with the furniture that you have already!

What Color Would You Paint These Walls? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles

I love the lines in the couch and would focus on finding a piece of art that has the couch color in it to draw wall and pillow colors from that. I've found that a whole array of patterns and styles can go together as long as you stick to the same color palate. This creates more of the funky lived-in look.

I agree that the Adirondack chairs should go and the couch should be covered if it still fits space wise. Maybe the new chair could have a reading space created around it.
