I imagine this is an insurance company's nightmare. One good gust of wind and it ends up tangled in power lines or wrapped around something belonging to someone else. Or worse, knocks someone over, or whacks them on the head. I'll pass.

All our neighbors are fabulous except one - directly across the street. The husband is a creep and pervy and I've lost count of how many times I've called the cops.

One cop asked me if I had talked to the wife to try to figure out what was going on with her husband. After talking with them, the cop came back over and told me "don't bother with the wife, she's as crazy as he is."

They (and the cops) know I'm armed and trained. Creepy neighbor hasn't bothered me since he found that out.

My son's nursery was black and white. I chose a cow theme since we are in Wisconsin. It wasn't kitchy, just black and white and whimsical. I loved that room and missed it when we moved. That "baby" is now 21!

I used Sherwin Williams "Coastal Plain" (flat) in my kitchen with similar colored cabinets. At night it shows grayer than during the day where it's a true bluish green. Brings out the warmth of the wood cabinets nicely. Very quiet and lovely.

I do laundry almost every day and do it without any complaints except that I think laundry should jump out of the dryer, fold itself, and put itself away. That's why my hubs does that part. He hates to dust and vacuum, so that's my job. We do the trash, the deep cleaning, and the tidying together, and we've been married for 30+ years.

Yellow and Orange Echinacea (Coneflowers) and yellow Rudbeckia would look fabulous along the side of your steps.

Well done!

My purse never goes on the counter in the kitchen. I read somewhere about what the bottoms of purses are contaminated with (urine, e coli, etc.,) and said never again. I hang my purse on the same hook that I hang my coat.

Junk mail never comes in my house. I sort it on the way up the driveway and toss in the recycle bin before I open the door.

I put all my shredded paper in my compost bin (kind of the ultimate in data security - it never leaves my property!). It's awesome to keep mold from forming if the compost is too wet and makes nice fluffy compost.

My biggest problem is moles living in the middle of the compost bin through the winter. It must stay warm in there because every Spring when I start to turn the contents again, I have to shoo the family of moles out of there.

My second house had a pink toilet, tub and sink, baby blue tiles on the wall and floor, and gray bull nose around everything. It was all in gorgeous shape and straight out of the 50's atomic age. I couldn't bear to tear it out (or afford it at the time) so I ripped out the old gray wallpaper, swapped the crappy replacement faucet for a vintage 50's look, painted the walls white, bought gray pink and blue towels and called it done.

I'm on my third house in 22 years - all of them fixer uppers. I wouldn't trade them for anything. I am comfortable diagnosing and working on almost any problem (except electricity), from knowing next to NOTHING when we bought our first house.

The reward is not simply a job well done by ones own hand, but things such as 15 years after purchasing the run down neighborhood "haunted house" having neighbors STILL stop by to tell you how glad they are that you fixed up the house and are enjoying it.

I'm a zone 5 gardener and I will not baby any plant. If it's not hardy here, then onto the compost pile it goes. You'd think that would limit my choices, but it doesn't.

I have more than a half acre filled with hardy perennial beauties from all over and it's pretty low maintenance. A little weeding now and then is all my gardens require. It's a great way to be outside and a conversation starter with the neighbors when they come looking for plant advice. Right now it's covered with 6-12 inches of snow, but I can still dream of the future.

Keeping a positive attitude is so important when every little thing could be cause to fly off the handle. I found renovating with a 6 - 10 year old around kept us humble and in good spirits - hard to curse or find fault when your kid is watching like a hawk.

And the best part is that our 6 year old (at the time) noticed a major flaw in design before we got too far into renovation and saved us tons of time and money. Now he's in school for structural engineering, so I can't complain!
