Thanks all for the input. Not sure if I will get anymore comments but let me further elaborate:

1. We just purchased the home this fall and have been basically doing minor renovations to every room in the house.
2. Budget = small. Don't have too much money, enough to refinish the floor, paint the walls and maybe something else really minor
3.The style of the house is currently being formed, but it's a cross between craftsman/natural/mid-century modern
4. The stove will be replaced by a modern range
5. All other kitchen appliances are new black
6. The cabinets are in great condition and actually beautiful wood (some say mahogany)
7. Gutting the kitchen is not an option
8. We will be laying dark red/maroon marmoleum in the next couple months

Again, I appreciate all of your help and will hopefully send it renovated pics later this year

Where to Begin to Update My New Kitchen? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy San Francisco

Thank you all! I have moved in and it does look a little better.

My biggest concern now is the lack of light. I am interested in True Blue's idea to "Lastly, one of my favorite suggestions. Consider looking at a local plastics store for acrylic mirror. Have rectangles cut to fit the bottom of the concrete well, or just the bottom of the window sill on the inside." What do you mean to fit the bottom of the concrete well? Would I place large mirrors all along it? The well happens to be 3' away from the windows and about 24' long. I am planning to plant a variety of plants (herbs, veggies, wildflowers). Any other ideas of making the place brighter and lighter would be much appreciated!

I wouldn't mind painting it, nothing too dark though. I wanted to stain it because I wanted to keep it around it's natural color.

For the painting, what kind/type of paint would you recommend? Also, any good places brick and morter or online for modern drawer pulls?

Lastly, I really like the idea of nice wall paper, I was actually going to use a sort of retro periodic table of elements placemat to cover the opening (where my laptop is sitting) over the top. It needs to be removable since I would use the sewing maching (just not all of the time). Any good sites?

It's a great concept since I am really not sure what could go with a 50's formica table, but why $498 for one chair?
