I've made this twice now with local Okinawan sweet potatoes- it's fantastic: http://projects.washingtonpost.com/recipes/2010/01/13/warm-sweet-potato-salad-chorizo/ What Are Good Recipes for Using Up a Bunch of Sweet Potatoes? Good Questions |

What's interesting is on that list, every city has a renting wage lower than the median salary. The exception is Honolulu. I'm lucky because my salary is decent, but I know many people work several jobs here just to make ends meet (not just because of housing, but because everything costs more even if it's local). I moved here specifically for a job experience that I can't get anywhere else, but there's no opportunity for career growth or to make more money since they can always easily find someone to replace you. I can afford to live here (let's not talk about savings accounts though), but from a career perspective I know I will have to leave soon. I think a lot of people do stay because they grew up here or moved to Hawaii for the purpose of moving to Hawaii. There really is no other place like it. The bathroom in my 1950s apartment has the same problem. I removed one of the lightbulbs from the vanity lighting fixture and replaced it with a socket adapter and an extension cord:

Sad that Hawaii was left out out of "it's really not that far really"-- they just started a non-stop flight between Honolulu and my hometown on the East Coast and this would make the perfect gift! Pleased to see that Hawaii (and Alaska) made the cut on the other maps. Not always the case. From Sea To Shining Sea: Marvelous USA Maps for the 4th |

We have a couple of "yuppie" Safeways in Honolulu that have the widest selection of things. I also love Foodland (a local chain), but most of them are tiny and while they carry high quality stuff, they can't carry a great variety of it. Whole Foods prices are pretty comparable to the regular grocery stores here, but I haven't found the magic time of day where it isn't clogged with regular shoppers or van-loads of tourists. All three chains do a really good job of stocking local products like poke, produce, and smoked ahi dip mmm... The Best and Worst Supermarkets Consumer Reports |

My closet suffers from heavy wooden doors that don't really slide that well without me applying the full force of my weight on them. I keep the doors shut in order to keep the cats out and the end result is I never go into my closet. I've moved nearly everything I actually wear onto a hanging bar next to my bed that is high enough to be out of cat reach. I would love to get new doors installed, but they are custom sized and something like that would cost a small fortune to replace here. 5 Things that Will Make Any Storage Space Inefficient |

I grew up in an Asian house on the mainland and the no-shoe rule was quite clear and people visiting our house adjusted/planned ahead. I live in Hawaii now and the no-shoe (or slippah) rule is quite clear and everyone adjusts/plans accordingly (funny to watch movers balance a couch overhead while kicking off their boots before entering your home). The problem is when it's not known ahead of time what the rules are (frequently the case on the mainland)-- then you can't adjust and your Manolos get stolen. My sofa looks exactly like the Fornells Convertible Sofa, except grey-- maybe it is the same brand? I bought it at Inspiration for about $1000 so I imagine it can be found cheaper on the mainland. It weighs a ton, but is fantastic in a tiny apartment because it fits literally every need for seating I have. The weave of the fabric also show no signs of being clawed by cats. I thought I had ditched landlines forever until I moved and had to get one in order to have a local number. It did prove useful once when I left a credit card in the taxi and the driver was able to look me up in the phone book to tell me he had found it. And actually, really useful the 10,000 times I've lost my cell phone somewhere in my apartment. Moving Survey: Do You Have a Land Line? |

$1750/month for a 1950s era walkup apartment in Honolulu, HI. 560 sq ft, 1BR (sort of), 1BA, lanai, dry wood termites, no AC. Ultra expensive electricity not included. But I can walk to the beach, and I hold out hope that someday I can convince my landlord to remove all the termite-infested cabinets. Survey: How Much Is Your Monthly Rent or Mortgage? |

take into account where you are moving though- I got rid of a small couch, dresser, etc when I moved to Hawaii and I realize the cost to replace those items with comparable pieces was more than the cost of shipping them across the country. the choices of furniture are also limited here, most stores wont ship to the islands, and months of scouring craiglist hasn't yielded any great vintage finds (thanks, termites!) My pineapple plant is named James after James Dole. Unfortunately I can't remember anymore if I grew James from a Dole (Oahu) pineapple or a Maui pineapple. Haven't gotten around to naming my other 3 pineapple plants. Do You Give Your Plants Names? Reader Survey |

I haven't used my AC since I've moved to Honolulu (though I did use my space heater a few times). I've noticed the key is having good air flow. Most apartment buildings here have outdoor corridors so apartments have windows on both sides of the unit. I've been in apartments here with interior corridors and they were hot and stifling, even when the trades were blowing. 5 Unexpected Benefits to Forgoing the Air Conditioner | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |
