An upside-down funnel or bowl on birdhouses that are on a pole prevents squirrels from being able to climb up the pole.

I had a subscription to Canadian House and Home, but I gave it up because every issue was practically the same. There was always a featured photoshoot of a white-walled house filled with the same modern furniture in every issue. I like that look, but over and over again it's just bland.

My walk-in closet is great, but it does get dusty. I have to clean it regularly and I worry about the dust getting into my clothes.

If you put sheets on it to sleep on, would it end up looking like a regular bed? or would you take them off every day? Seems like that could get annoying. Maybe you could get some kind of foamy mattress-like thing (maybe a futon pad?) to put on top that the sheets would stick to and remove that every day.

Personally, I would go with a regular mattress.

As someone who owns chickens, I'm very conscious of the fact that chickens poop everywhere and sometimes get it on their eggs. Even if there aren't clumps of poop on the eggs, the chicken has probably walked around and sat and dusted itself in fecal matter and then rubs up against the eggs. I always wash my eggs and refrigerate them.

I second the Ikea besta cabinets, from the tv section. I have the taller white ones and used the same style of handles and the effect is very similar.

I use Genius Scan to keep track of receipts for expense reports at work, looks like the same kind of deal. Works great!

I've looked at those Overstock bamboo blinds before but the lack of lining bothers me, since people outside can see right through them at night, plus my HOA requires that all window treatments appear white from the street. Is there any way to line them yourself? I know either Home Depot or Lowe's sell a brand of bamboo blind that has an attachable liner, so i wonder how easy it is to do. Those didn't come in the right size for my windows, unfortunately, custom lined blinds from JCPenney were surprisingly expensive.

If she's been living in the house for awhile, there's probably not much hope of being able to redecorate anything because everything's already there. Keep your room how you like it and figure out a place you can go to for some away time, like a gym or yoga studio or something, when you need to escape.

Get a bunch of white, floral, lacy, vintagey accessories for the mantle, kind of like this girl's: http://hummusbird.com/category/decor/, and fill the fireplace with candles. You could put a runner on the shelf to break up all that wood.

I had a window like this and I thought about it for a year before i got frustrated and bought a bay window curtain rod off overstock.com. They sound kind of cheesy, but once I put it up it didn't look bad. Ikea also has wire systems you can use to hang curtains - I think it's called dignitet or something like that.

I had looked into buying shades, but i had small side windows and a large middle window, and i was having trouble finding a style that came in sizes to fit both windows. I could have gotten custom shade, but they're so expensive.

I think a sectional sofa, a sofa with a chaise, or a regular sofa and a small apartment sized sofa would look better than two full-size sofas. Don't add more furniture than you need, it'll make everything look cramped. You have a beautiful room. :)

To me, if the MLS listing including it in the bedroom total and didn't mention that it was a walk-through, I'd feel disappointed once I saw it in person. It sounds like it's a small room and having a bed in there might make it seem smaller. Maybe try staging it as a home office or sitting area.

For a super cost-effective solution, if you go to a carpet store you'll probably be able to get a big remnant for about $10-$30. If you go with an area rug, remember that you'll either need to be able to pick it up and shake it out or own a vacuum. It might be easier to get a floor mat (Urban Outfitters used to sell them) that you can sweep.

If your closet isn't working right, call your landlord! Don't be shy about it, it's their job to fix things.

Does it really cost $28,000 to convert a spare bedroom into a home office? I could see if you maybe converted an unfinished basement, which you'd think would have a better return, but if the space already exists you're pretty much just putting some furniture in an empty room.

Get a huge, colorful print and hang it under that light fixture behind your chairs. Maybe also take the throws off your chairs and wrap the bottom cushions of the sofa in them so that the patterns don't quite match up? There was a spread in Marie Claire Maison that had sofas slipcovered with mismatched fabrics and it looked much nicer than it sounds.

I would probably put a desk where their table is pushed against the wall and put your table in the middle of the room or by the wall where their desk is now. If you get a small, expandable table it would fit just fine.

If you want a skinny desk but can't find anything, you could maybe try a console table with keyboard trays mounted underneath. I have an ikea desk (besta?) that is about the depth of a console table and I really like it.
