We had to let our cat Munchausen go late last year, and it's been hard - even as I write this I find myself tearing up. One of the most comforting things that we have to remind us of him are some detailed photos we took of him and our other cat, Zilla, a couple of years ago. We were bored one night, so my husband took out his camera and a macro lens and we took pictures of them. He's not a photographer, but he took a lot of shots of Munch in his element, and a lot of detail shots of his funny little physical quirks -- the insanely soft spot on top of his head, a rogue silver strand of hair on the back of his puffy black coat, details of his paws, etc. Sometimes you forget the fine details after losing a pet, but going through the photographs offer comforting reminders of their little quirks.

On a different note, Munch always had a habit of tracking paw prints from the litter box through the kitchen. He passed away in November of last year, yet there are three paw prints that are still on the kitchen floor -- the floor's been swept and mopped numerous times over, but those paw prints are still there. It's a comforting reminder that he's always still here with us!

Socks! It might be 95 degrees in the summertime, but I always, always have to sleep with my socks on. I also used to queue up an episode of "Walker Texas Ranger" on DVD (seriously) during bouts of insomnia, and it was so familiar and comforting, I could fall asleep in no time.

Can I also just say that I love hearing from people who admit they still sleep with their childhood stuffed animal or blanket and don't give a s--- about what anyone thinks? I'm nearly 30 and still sleep with my Winnie-the-Pooh (and as a bonus -- my husband's cool with it).

I live in Chicago and often pass this building when venturing north, always figuring that the views must be spectacular -- and they are! It's great to actually see what the space looks like from the inside looking out -- thanks for sharing!

I rather like these BECAUSE they're so minimal and understated. Why does everything geared towards kids have to always be so obnoxiously flashy?

Although I must say that I can't stand the trend of posters (or tea towels, or prints...) with trite sayings on them ("You're the cream in my coffee," "All I want to do is eat cupcakes with you," etc. Please! No more!)

I completely agree, Thorndale. Overall, AT, I would appreciate more House Tour photographs of the spaces themselves–how the furniture, furnishings, rooms and dwellers interact with each other, and fewer close-ups of "stuff."

In five years, I'd rather be alive than have enough money saved off of rent to buy a car (or anything, for that matter).

A cheap apartment in a shady neighborhood should never trump your health and safety. But even if YOU don't mind an unsafe neighborhood, think about the health and safety of your guests, your partner (present or future), or kids (present or future).

I knew someone who bought a nice condo in a really dangerous neighborhood. I always felt unsafe when going to visit, but she used to laugh about the frequent gunshots she'd hear, and gang members that would hang out on the street corner by her place - almost as though it were a badge of bravery to be admired. It wasn't until she had a baby and had a very close scare that she decided that enough was enough and it was better to move to another neighborhood where violent crime wasn't an everyday occurrence.

- Uncle Alex's legendarily badass record collection
- Dad's '71 Torino
- My aunt and uncle's '69 Charger
- And not quite a "why did they give this away?" story, but my grandparents used to have '70s black-and-white faux-Art Nouveau wallpaper in their bathroom, with a pattern featuring Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Lots and lots of boobs on that wallpaper. When I was little I couldn't hold in my giggling whenever I'd go into their bathroom. If I could find a roll of it today, I'd buy it in a second.

When I was a teenager, I was obsessed with John Lennon's sunken bed in the movie, "Help!" and always wished I had one of my own.

The sunken tub, on the other hand, seems to be an accident waiting to happen - one misstep into the tub does NOT sound nearly as cushy as tripping into bed.

On a side note, I would be happy if the tub-in-bedroom trend went on its merry way.

I had to do a serious double-take - this is awesome! I even like the way it contrasts with the wood (veneer?) cabinets. Very nice work!

Thanks for this article! I've always been curious about the origins of store's product names.

Although easy-to-pronounce names are probably more desirable among stores as well as the buying public, I wish I could see more culturally diverse names in magazines and furniture catalogs. (Perhaps my bias comes from having an unusual Spanish surname - the kind that a chair probably won't be named after, but still!)

Funny, because after reading this article I realized that I don't have any signature items from my home state of Texas - except a six-pack of Lone Star that usually occupies space in my fridge.

My husband and I live in Chicago, and there's a couple of things - a pilfered CTA train map (for the record, neither of us stole it - it was given out as a door prize at a friend's party).

And - prepare to cringe - a print of a painting of John Wayne Gacy. We met the artist who painted it (Darick Maasen, a very talented guy), and my husband (himself an artist attracted to strange subjects) insisted on buying it, saying that it was quintessentially Chicago.

@andregirl - The Chicago parking permits you see are permits for visitors/guests. If you live on a residential street with permit parking, your permit is automatically printed on your city sticker. The guest permits are paid for separately, and last for 24 hours.

Organization-wise, I actually have our guest permits on our landing strip by the door. I think it's easier to give out the guest passes before people come in, get comfortable, and then realize that they have to venture back out to their car!

My parents found the cardboard "tombstone" my older sister and I created and placed in the backyard for our deceased betta fish, Stripey, when we were about 8 and 7, respectively. I have it framed and hanging in our hallway, and it's hilarious.

Apparently, one of us didn't do the math right -- if you look at the dates, it would appear that Stripey died before he was born. Also says, "Good fish. Quiet fish."
