Get a rice cooker, a food processor and a VERY good can opener. These things will be your besties!
We couldn't use a stove for over two months, and let me tell you, unless you have a huge deep freezer, you won't be able to make enough food and freeze it to last you.
I found the best dinners went something like this: open up a can of butter beans, mix with some chopped green onion, olive oil, a dash of dijon mustard and some salt and pepper to taste, then make some rice, and serve.
You could also do the same with drained kidney beans, but with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, green onion and s&p.
Also, make a lot of hummus and eat with fresh veggies (I'm gluten-free, so I don't do pita).
We did our kitchen right before our wedding, and this diet did me VERY well. I lost weight, but looked super healthy.
Oh, but I need to include three of the most important items: olives, cheese and lots and lots of wine. You'll need the alcohol to cope with the stress of your whole house being a complete mess, everything covered in dust, writing checks for thousands of dollars every week...etc. And the olives and cheese are just for fun.
Good luck!!!

I've been gluten-free for 12 years. And I kinda feel like an old person saying, "Back in my day...," but I have to say it's MUCH easier now to go gluten-free than it was back then.
I think that some people are addicted to bread and carbs, I know I was in my "past life." So it might be necessary to go on an elimination diet for those that are serious about finding out if their food is hurting them.
I went on a vitamin, rice and hamburger only diet for awhile and slowly added foods back in and logged it all in a food diary. Not saying that's for everybody and I probably should've consulted a doctor while doing it, but that's what I did and I learned a lot about my food sensitivies (and eating habits).
If you do suspect you have a problem with gluten, the most important thing is to do the diet for at least three months and if you accidentally (or purposely) ingest gluten, you should really start the whole thing over because doing it for a week isn't long enough for you to heal from the effects gluten could be having on your body.
And if you do feel better, CONGRATULATIONS because there's nothing worse to live your life in a fog, suffering from a food allergy you don't know you have. Going gluten-free is the best thing I've ever done...it literally saved my life.

Going Gluten-Free: Resources and 10 Easy Recipes To Get You Started

I have "food issues" (sorry that my body can't tolerate gluten and peanuts, I promise you it's nothing personal against dinner party hosts), and all of the nasty comments about it here is the reason why I generally decline to go to dinner parties (other parties I just eat before I go, assuming that I won't be able to eat anything) and now I'm even shying away from going to holiday dinners at my in-laws (even though I ALWAYS tell them that I'll bring the dessert and bake any kind of gluten-free bread/rolls they want).
As for some of the insinuations here that people are making up their food allergies: the frequency of food allergies IS on the rise - the comments on this blog are just some of the evidence of that - yet it's funny how little you hear of research going on to find out WHY no one had nut allergies (except for me) back when I was a kid and now you're not even allowed to bring P&B sandwiches into some schools.
I wonder what has so dramatically changed in our food system to cause this? Surely, the HUGE prepared food industry couldn't have anything to do with the rise in allergies just as it couldn't possibly be keeping research dollars away from answering this question? No, of course not.
But I can assure you that no one with a food allergy is making it up. I wish I were...it'd make my life a lot easier (and I'd get to go to more dinner parties).

No mention of vegetable pizza? The cold pizza made with cream cheese and cut up raw veggies on top? That's the ultimate appetizer pizza. I'm making that for the app this Easter weekend.

Made this last night, it was SUPER good. I oversalted it (my bad, I wasn't using a teaspoon--tsk, tsk on me), but I chopped up some cilantro and mixed it with rice to make it into a main dish. Very good.

This is going to sound weird, but Aldi's canned diced tomatoes are the BEST canned tomatoes EVER! Whenever I make pizza sauce, I only use those. For canned tomatoes (and even the fresh ones being sold in the winter), they taste so fresh.

Thanks for this post. Three days before my wedding my mother went into the hospital, she was my only family member that was going to be there, and I didn't know whether she'd be released in time. Before all this, I planned to make gluten-free cupcakes for the reception. When all this went down, everyone told me to just order the damn cupcakes, but I didn't listen, and I was glad I didn't. As crazy as everything was and as out of control as it was (including my crying), I had a sense of calm in the hours while baking the night before the wedding that I couldn't achieve doing anything else. In the end, she was able to make it, but the big thing that got me through that stress was my time in the kitchen.

Granite-backlash makes me giggle. We had soapstone counters/farmhouse sink installed in our kitchen remodel (because we have a Chicago bungalow and wanted to stick with traditional 1920s materials) and when we had people over, one person (boyfriend of a friend) said to me, "I am SO over granite."
But with that said, my mother had granite installed in her kitchen last year. I tried and tried to convince her of another material, but she had dreamed of granite for so long it was unthinkable for her to put anything but. However, she picked a LOVELY stone (I believe Blue Pearl, it's black with blue and gray specs in it), and I really do like it.

Totally agree with Emmi! If you can, ask her what's acceptable and what's not. It REALLY sucks to feel "forced" to eat something you're not cool with, almost as much as it'd suck to have a birthday party filled with food you can't eat...in that case, it's better not to have a party at all.

Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free Treats for a Birthday Party?
Good Questions

I'm gluten-free and always trying to suggest things for my inlaws to make for me. I'm not sugar-free though, but I'll try to help.
For Snacks:
-Homemade hummus with veggies and gluten-free crackers or corn chips
-Salsa and chips
-Roasted nuts with herbs
-Cream cheese and olives on celery (if they can do peanut butter, you could also do sugar free pb w/ raisins on celery)
For Sweets (this is way harder):
-If your co-worker does honey, you could bake some apples in a little water with honey and lemon juice
-Strawberries (or any other sweet fruit) and whipped cream (not sweetened)

The comments from the international people is exactly why I REALLY love Thanksgiving...keeps Christmas madness (a little more, anyway) in check. If we didn't have Thanksgiving, everyone would be putting up their X-mas decorations right after taking down their Halloween stuff. Granted, I've seen a few houses do this anyway, but the general consensus is that those people are crazy.
This will be my third year of hosting Thanksgiving and I can't get enough of all the Thanksgiving recipes and guides. I'm totally addicted to them. Sorry! I like that they make it okay no to serve the same dish that your mom or grandmom did...especially for someone like me who's gluten-free and can't eat the traditional green bean casserole w/ the fried onions on top.

Agree with the "old cabinets were better" group, especially if they wanted white cabinets...why not just paint them? Kinda silly.
Although I will say the remodel is a classic style enough that it should stay in style for awhile, but just wished they would've went with a custom cabinet maker and not IKEA.
Also, stop posting this story.

I painted my bedroom BM Wet Concrete and it came off as REALLY purple, but in a muted way. At first I didn't like it, and I still have mixed opinions on it, but the color is growing on me and after trying to go for a neutral color, I'm glad it has personality.

It's too campy and that dude doesn't look campy, so it comes off as fake. Like if the guy or his wife collected stuff from the '60s and filled it with original quirky stuff, then I think the look could be pulled off, but doing that crazy paint job and painting the trophies matching colors and throwing a red couch in the mix look just plain dumb.
I DO like how you used the paneled walls to create stripes, but I really wished you went into more detail on how to do that. You credit the guy who did the stripping...I'd like to read more from him on how to go about painting wood paneling since a LOT of us have that ugly stuff in our houses.

Could you go into the proper technique of painting over wood paneling like that? I keep reading conflicting stuff on it, some say use TSP to clean the paneling, other say just a good scrubbing of soap and water. We're considering painting over the exact same paneling as that in our house and want to it properly.
Thanks.
