I know that people lived in the subtropic climate of New Orleans for hundreds of years before AC was invented and didn't die of the heat and humidity, but I am not made of that hardy stock. I am crazy envious of all of you who can go without and have power bills that are under $50. Mine can top $250.mo in the long, long summer (May - October) and that's for a house under 1100 sq. ft. *sigh*

What they have done is used every tiny bit of the narrow lot. That's very normal for New Orleans. A bigger porch or more outdoor space would have cut down on the home's sq. footage. As you can see from the houses beside this Alligator House... they did the same thing. The house is built right up to the edge of the lot with a set of stairs for access. Sure, everyone would like a bigger front yard or porch, but here, it is not always possible. On this block, in this neighborhood and with this lot it would have been a waste.

I've seen this house many times and loved it. When my partner and I were house hunting here in New Orleans last summer, we wondered how much it had cost to build, since it was gorgeous and we'd love to buy a slender lot and do the exact same thing. Too bad I didn't investigate further since I now see that the budget is amazingly affordable. It's great to get to see the interior as well.

Built-in window seats that no one would ever actually sit in/on.

Barstools at a counter and counterstools at a bar. If they are the wrong height, then no one can functionally use them. Why have them at all?

For me it's Staub rather than Le Creuset but I actually think it's even prettier. I do keep my cocotte out in the open. It sits atop my microwave when not in use, all gorgeous and blingy. The vibrant colors of enamel are perfect for kitchen decor.

What a fantastic DIY. I saw it on Bromeliad and was knocked out. The reclaimed fabric seems perfectly appropriate to me.

Reading material for on the toilet seems to be a man thing. I've never understood it. Reading material for in the tub, however, I am a huge fan of. The tub is where I read the most and in fact, judge the quality of books by how many times I had to add hot water to the bath.

My partner and I stayed at the Kimber Modern last year, just days after they opened, for our anniversary. It was, without question, my favorite hotel stay ever. The room (the same one pictured above) was beautiful with a clarity of design that was simultaneously soothing and exciting. I still daydream about living there instead of just overnighting.

The bedding and linens were super fab. Towels and bathrobes so luxurious, we had to inquire about their origin. The common area is overhung with the comforting presence of long armed oaks and the dining area was equipped with a lovely breakfast of good cheese, crumpets, fruit, and more local, organic goodness. A very good self-serve espresso machine rounded off what was already a gorgeous kitchen.

Staying at the Kimber is a very different experience than staying at a regular hotel. It feels more as though you are staying at the spectacularly lovely modern residence of a very well heeled friend (with excellent taste) who just happens to be out of town. You are left alone (almost no staff contact), yet all of your needs are attended to. It's wonderful. Can't gush enough... obviously.

Only thing to consider... $$$. Our room was about $300 for one night, although I think they've come down a bit since then.

How strange. I would never have thought that portraits of unknown people would be so controversial. Very interesting. They don't bother me a bit. I love looking at people's faces. I would SO take a photo of a stranger on the metro and put it up in my house. None of it creeps me out in the least... unless the people in the images themselves are creepy. Would probably prefer not to have photos of malicious or scary looking people staring down. People with strong attitude, yes. People who look like they want to stab me when I turn my back, no.

Ship horns from the Mississippi and the sound of the streetcar on St. Charles, several blocks away. They are two of my favorite sounds ever and never fail to make me happy and content.

What a fab idea. I've been toying with the idea of joining a beginner's quilting class and LOVE the idea of doing part of my city, New Orleans. Although, knowing not much about quilting, it would probably be a much harder job than a little beginner could manage. Still, what a great idea.

My solution to the cold was to move to New Orleans 9 years ago. Works well most of the time. Other than that, ubiquitous sweatshirt hoodie, thick socks and a fleece throw under the desk to nuzzle my feets into because of cold wooden floors. I sometimes consider one of those electric foot mats, but haven't gone that route yet.
