I love this idea, and have also been thinking of doing it myself. My older kitty was adopted from a shelter as an adult, and re-training him has never really been possible for me (luckily, he's mostly very well-behaved anyway). So I have one chair with claw pulls all down the front of the arms.

I think if I ever do it, I'll probably use spray adhesive - though I also love confounded's idea of nail trim, so maybe both?

Oh, and I bet it would fix the problem with the scratching on that piece, too. The cats I've had (and I've had them all my life) have never seemed to have any interest in clawing smooth things like leather.

I've never seen it, but now I kind of want to do it!

I suspect that depending how you finished it (i.e. whether you put some kind of glaze over the pennies or left them bare), it might take on a verdigris patina over time, which would be less shiny. (Though of course, that could look cool too, depending on the surface.)

@Texanmarmot I'm pretty sure that tiffin set is microwaveable plastic, not metal (so it says if you click through). I have the same issue with metal tiffins, so I was kind of psyched to see this one!

I second @Skidou's velcro suggestion. I put my desk together that way (also with the hollow IKEA tops - one corner piece and one rectangular piece off one side), and especially once you set stuff on it, it's so solid, you'll forget it's not actually screwed together.

I'd go for a dark, chocolatey brown. Maybe just on one wall, with something creamy on the others. We have that color combination going on in our bathroom, and it looks very clean and organic.

Also in Seattle. Current apartment is 1000+ sq ft 2-br, with its own garage, in the Ballard neighborhood, $1470. Last apartment was a 750 sq ft 1-br, shared garage, also in Ballard, $850.

I'd say for a 2-br, the lowest I would go in this neighborhood would be about $1000; highest would be around what we're paying now. (Though it's possible to pay a lot more.)

@James: A friend of mine did a cross-country move last year with multiple cats & dogs, and she decided the easiest way to do it was to rent an RV - then you can keep the litter in one spot and the cats can roam a little bit even on a multi-day trip. We're now planning our own cross-country move, and we're planning to do the same thing: move ourselves, the kitties, and the turtle in the RV, drag the car behind, and move all our stuff in one or two of those parking-space-sized POD things.

No, Ellabee, you're not. I like them too - though more for the kind of light they cast than for their looks.

I fly all the time for work, and hate to be without:
- Dramamine (you never know when it'll be turbulent, plus, if you like to sleep your way to your destination...)
- An eye mask (especially on redeyes, cutting the ambient light really helps me sleep - but it's also good for when the Dramamine knocks me out :) )
- Hand sanitizer and lotion
- Snacks (especially fruit, since it's hydrating but not a liquid)
- Big huge Nalgene bottle
- A book and a magazine (for variations in attention span), and maybe a crossword
- An extra coat or sweater to rest my head on (thus avoiding nasty airplane pillows)
- iPhone for music (with the headphones! I've forgotten them a few times, that sucks)

TV and food for me too. Though I'm thinking of adding a ban on the phrase "love lounge" to the list. ;)

jaynamo: fwiw, I rented from two companies in Chicago. One, K&G, would totally qualify as a slumlord - mice, roaches, exploding radiators, just all manner of gross. The other, Wirtz, was pretty great (if a little strict) - meticulously clean, onsite maintenance, very responsive to every concern. Just my $0.02.

I also agree with the first 2 comments.

And I would add: those critters in the photo? Those are wasps. Wasps are waaaaay more irritating than bees, because they don't die if they sting you. And though wasps are pretty efficient predators for other bugs, they tend to be pretty terrible pollinators. So yeah, if you have a wasp problem, go ahead, build a trap and kill some wasps. But definitely think twice about doing the same to the bees.

I'd be really curious to see how it's lit at night. There are so many awesome effects you can get with a good theatrical scrim...
