As a teacher, I have to (sadly) admit that many of the books we read growing up just don't have the same appeal to today's children. That said, some series that my fifth grade students and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading are:

-Percy Jackson & The Olympians (The Lightning Thief film is based on the first book in the series... it's all about Greek mythology and is EXTREMELY popular with adolescents and advanced readers!) by Rick Riordan
-The 39 Clues
-Shadow Children series by Margaret Patterson Haddix

Non-series books that I can still convince my students to love include the Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster, Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar, My Teacher is an Alien by Bruce Coville, The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg, and anything by Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, and Andrew Clements (these are more for 3rd/4th grade readers).
