When I went to Catholic school in NYC we weren't allowed to bring our own lunches. We had to eat the school food. I'm not sure why, it might have had something to do with going to a diocese school. When I went to a private Catholic high school we were allowed to bring our own lunch which I did sometimes, but I was so not used to bringing my own lunch that it was usually just a hamburger I'd bring in from Burger King. I wish I had a dishwasher more than I had a washer/dryer. Dishes have to be washed every day, and I could use the extra counter space that the drying rack is taking up. I also have very hard water, so it's hard for the dishes to get clean sometimes. With a dishwasher I can use water softener and have the dishes come out truly clean. 5 Tips for Living Without a Washer/Dryer |

I had to giggle when I saw the bathroom. I too am the renter of a place with an "Ugly Bathroom" and I've just decided to work with it instead of trying to hide it. I must say it is growing on me. Caryn & Jared's \"Bird by Bird\" Collections House Tour |

As a Native, I'm not sure why tipis are so fascinating for non-Natives in design, especially for children's rooms. I know non-Natives who do actually use tipis for camping and to me that makes sense. When camping I'd much rather use a tipi than tent, especially in cold weather because you can build a fire inside. Someone who owns a real tipi is probably really commtted to using it, since it does take work. But for children's use, in a room? At least in this case it's not covered with gaudy fake American Indian artwork. Meh. Don't-Miss Beautiful Bedrooms: Week Four My Bedroom Retreat Contest |

I hand washed dishes all my life except for a few years in my first apartment, which was entirely too expensive. I am now back to handwashing. Although I'm used to it, I'd much rather a dishwasher. The water in my area is very hard, which makes the dishes very hard to clean. I use a ton of dishwashing liquid and I have to wear gloves so my hands don't get dry. I have a plastic tub that I soak and will sometimes pour some Calgon water softener in there. Otherwise if I don't get to it quick enough the dishes don't get clean enough. It's a chore and I know I'm wasting water and using unecessary chemicals. Not to mention it leaves my old enamel sink grimy and it's hard to clean. :/ I love my 1920s apartment, but hate not having a dishwasher. My Life Without a Dishwasher Renters Solutions |

No, it's not part of my cultural practice. We actually don't even have dessert after a meal. We might have "tea" later on though, but the salt stays on the table. French Etiquette: Take the Salt off the Table! |

Try Craigslist. You can often get a decent machine with all the parts for very cheap. They also tend to be older machines that were built with better quality parts than the cheap ones in the store. A lot of people think they'l ltake up sewing then often don't and their machines just sit there. Or grandma gave them her old machine but they're not really interested. I got mine for 75 bucks with the plastic still on it, manual and all parts. It works great! DIY Project Essentials: Shopping for a Basic Beginner Sewing Machine |

Speaking as a linguist the lie/lay distinction is becoming blurred, so that talking about something "laying flat"is fine. Things like this has happened countless times during the evolution of the English language and will continue long after we're gone. It's just natural language change. I've had both good and bad boiled brussel sprouts. I think it depends on the sprout. I've found the smaller they are the more bitter they are. The humongous ones boiled are delicious. They have a slightly sweet taste. Experiment with Food I Think I Don't Like Reader Resolutions 2013 |
