We did this in our daughters' room with the lyrics from Moon River. Over one crib it says "Two drifters, off to see the world . . . " and over the other it says "There's such a lot of world to see."

OMG! A kids room that looks like actual kids live in it! Never did I think I would see it on AT in my life.

Knotty pine is ugly as sin. You did a great thing by painting over it. It looks wonderful.

One of my closest friends gave me a tin of tea-like stuff that you but on your ravaged "lady bits" to cool and comfort them after giving birth. The kind of thing only a very close friend can give you! (alas I had a c-section :()

Absolutely adorable. My daughter would kill for this dresser. Nothing beats Sesame Street.

I love that doll crib! I'd like to know who makes that. Three days after we bought our new house, our neighbor had her (apparently annual) "everything's a dollar" rummage sale and I got one of those IKEA egg chairs for a buck!

Love the change! The before was boring, dated and ugly. It looks great now!

MCM is NOT "neutral". It's trendy right now. When your kid is 15 it probably will not be. I'm sure my mom picked "neutral" and "timeless" pieces for my nursery in 1980 but guess what, it's not timeless anymore.

Okay, I didn't realize the wooden doll (slide #2) was some kind of a dog(?). I thought it was just the poor old mom with her boobs down to her naval.

I'm ruthless about clutter but for some reason I just can't throw out stuffed animals. For some reason, it just makes me feel sad and guilty. My girls are into dolls and not stuffed animals, so there they sit in an old bassinet in the girls' nursery . . .

I found the best way to tame toys. We adopted a one year old collie from the Humane Society. Every day he chews up at least one toy that I hate . . . that I may have "accidentally" left out.

I second the blabla dolls. My daughter hasn't gone anywhere without "Doll" since she got her for her first Christmas. They wear really well--she's even survived having two of her hands chewed off by our rescue pup. And because my daughter drags Doll everywhere with her, she gets tossed in the wash at least once or twice and week and washes up great.

We've decided to fill our 9 month old stocking with the only thing she truly cares about--binkies. I bet we can get 20 pacifiers into it.

We use butt paste with our cloth. It has never seemed to be a problem but our girls don't often get diaper rash very often.

Thanks! This is really timely as my almost 3 year old (lead by her older cousins) is starting to show interest in Barbies but I'm not sure if I want to go that route. I had tons of Barbies as a girl and loved them--mostly because they were "realistic", that is, not baby dolls, and I could role-play, play-act, etc with them. I had, and still have, a great self image even though I look nothing like a Barbie. I've always been of the view that the human women in our daughters lives shape their self-image, not their toys. That said, there is something kind of vulgar about them and the image of my toddler clutching a hugely stacked fashion doll in heels. I'll probably try to hold off a couple more years but I'm glad to see some understated dolls out there.

My daughter was 22 months old when her sister was born. I spent the weeks up to the birth talking about the new baby, the baby in my tummy, etc, etc but she understood very little. Events taking place in the future ("next month we will have a new baby") meant nothing to her, so we pretty much just threw her in the deep end when the baby was born. Luckily other than a little bit of jealousy (mostly when I was nursing), she rolled with it. It's so dependent on the toddler's age. She's 2 and a half now and she understands complex ideas so much better now--it would have been a totally different story if her sister had been born now. For the first six weeks or so, when she would wake up in the morning, she'd say "Oh! A baby!" as if it was a pleasant surprise over and over.

Anyway, if you have a very young toddler like mine, we tried to keep her life as normal as possible. She still loved her crib and still (I know, I know) took a bottle at night. When I first got pregnant, I'd fully planned to have her off bottles and out of the crib before her sister was born. Our older daughter ended up getting quite sick and ending the bottles/crib never ended up happening. Two in diapers, bottles and cribs ended up not being the end of the world and it gave my older daughter much-needed continuity. Be flexible and go easy on yourself and your toddler.

What a cute party! I love digging for shells--that's a great activity for little ones. What are water beads? They look cool. My husband grew up in Elgin and my in-laws still live there--it's a great town.
