I'm just not interested in reading about babies & children, cooking or about the best way to clean the whatever. I like to read about houses & about design. This site reminds me of my mother's magazines back in the '60's--Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, Woman's Day.

In my 20's, people would give me warm bedding & it was always appreciated--an Hermes comforter; a set of flannel sheets; a royal purple polar weight sleeping bag.

The first Christmas my husband (then boyfriend) & I were together, my mother gave him a giant bag of bungee cords. We thought it was hilarious but bungee cords turned out to be a practical & useful gift.

We lived in an old bungalow with the same issue. I tried everything & it was maddening. Because I prefer the security of sitting with my back to a wall, I never found a workable solution. The living room became a pass-through room to get to the dining room--which we used as a living room. The subsequent owners installed a liquor cabinet & a billiard table in the living room. For people who enjoy drinking & billiards, this could be a brilliant resolution to the no walls living room problem.

There are wonderful things in every photo. I'm sure I'll return to this post again & again because the house is full of sleek & magical style & love & comfort.

That said, I have to comment on the large number of usage & spelling errors in this post-- treasures that get throw out/Look at out my house/pallet/ nagahide/uncultured/let people pass-through....This article needs to be proofread & corrected.

Stylists' houses are the best. Maybe this could be the subject of a future AT post?

Lovely. I especially like the aqua vase & table against the gray walls.

(On a side note--AT does seem to be trending toward houses that are professionally decorated. I prefer the places that are done, bit by bit over time, by the people who live there. However beautiful, too much interior decorator product dilutes AT's quirky personal vibe.)

Graceful, gorgeous. The house has beautiful bones. Love the dark floors (though I know from experience that they can be a pain to maintain). Love the beige couch with the slightly disheveled upholstery. The spare-looking bedroom is restful to the eyes.

There is a distinct gender bias in this article. Of of the 6 writers, only one is a woman--& she is 1/2 of a married couple.

This is a very pretty, clean-lined house. I like the home-made goth chandelier--it adds a nice shot of texture. Much of the furniture, though, looks uncomfortable to me. Especially the wire dining room chairs--youch!

None of these groupings really make any sense to me because the chairs & couches are all so far away from each other that you would have to shout at the other person across the canyon of coffee tables. In all cases, I would drop the idea of the two parallel coffee tables & smoosh that furniture closer together. Also--too much stuff. I look at this room & I say to myself couch couch couch chair couch chair table table table table chair chair. Looks like an Ashley's furniture showroom.

Re. 2kidsandus' "armchair designers"--isn't that the point of this site? If I had posted 8+ photos of my living room on an internationally recognized design website, I would expect to receive feedback.

Nice place. Especially like the sheepskin bedspread. Might stitch together one of these babies from IKEA sheepskins one of these days.... Would have appreciated more wide shots in order to get a feel of the flow of the rooms. & Was a little confused about why we needed to see a closeup of a piece of cheese....As for the Best Advice comment--even as food for thought--it is simply wrong. My advice is don't be timid about investing yourself in a place that you love for a long time. House love (like romantic love) is one of life's great experiences. It adds richness & depth to every day. My life wouldn't feel complete without it. So what if they demolish the house after you move out? At least you know that you cherished it & gave it a grand send-off.

Passive aggressive decor. Not a good way to deal with marital discord.

Books arranged by color. A black staircase that will hightlight every speck of dust in every shoeprint. A variety of hard surfaces & hard chairs. Comfort can be overrated--but everyone needs at least one soft cozy place in a house. How do people live in such a controlled manner? Where do they relax?

Love the idea of a window overlooking a Zen rock garden--but the way this is done here calls too much attention to itself.

I think a round table would help the flow in this room. That way, traffic could move smoothly around it instead of having to dodge all those square sharp edges.

Mr. Mirandajane & I were married in our tumbledown cottage. The house wasn't fully renovated yet but we put red roses in vases everywhere & also big piles of ripe mangos. I wore a slinky green dress I bought for 80 cents at the Salvation Army. A local pagan priestess performed a beautiful wedding ritual (which discombobulated my sisters-in-law--but we were letting our freak flag fly that day....). We served Indian food (from a nearby restaurant) & really splurged on a delicious wedding cake from a swanky cake place. My only regret is that I let a friend photograph the event & the pictures were horrible. I agree that you should do yourself a favor & hire a professional photographer.
