I've gotta call bullshit on Pearmelon.... Maybe you have a good metabolism or amazing willpower, because even when I eat scratch made foods with whole foods (that are satisfying!), I still want/need snacks and overeat. Counting calories (or doing an equivalent like weightwatchers points) is a really effective way to pay attention to the way things accumulate. I eat healthy foods, just a whole lot of them. Keeping track of them is an easy way to curb mindless eating.
I am intrigued to read Nestle's book... I'm with whoever gave the shout out to Pollan, because his writings on whole nutrition changed the way I eat completely. Food is reduced too much to its nutrient values, including calories, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing in terms of weight control.

I was at TJ's on Thursday and my jaw dropped when I saw this, for $5.99 no less! I immediately called my mom. Though I haven't started using it yet, I've been dying to try coco oil as an acne and eczema treatment... now that I can afford it, I'm psyched!
And if it doesn't work on my skin... I can always cook with it! Big thumbs up to Trader Joe's for this addition.

I haaaaaate Hell or High Watermelon. Blech. Watery yet still bitter... bad combo and not refreshing at all.

I recently picked up KBC Blueberry Wheat Ale from Trader Joe's ($5.99 for a six pack- bonus!), and I like it a lot. I find however that it smells a lot more blueberry-y than it actually tastes. But it's still a good and easy drinking beer. It's like the blueberry scent is a bonus.

I'll second Mid-C Frank- the 3.99 Vinho Verde is delicious! Being a poor student I am also a devotee of three buck chuck, especially the most recent edition of Rose.
Tonight though, I'm going to have one of their blueberry beers- I just picked up a $6 6-pack and I'm excited to try it!

At aperitifs in Rome during my study-abroad days, I often saw fennel cut into thin wedges alongside carrot sticks and dips as a cruditee.

Just cook other things! Instead of bringing baked goods to family events etc., make a big batch of whatever it is you have been eating to improve your health. This can show them that it doesn't have to involve sugar to be yummy and bring a little health to the backyard cookout. Good luck!

I'm dying to experiment with homemade mayos... Eggs are my favorite food and I can eat mayo by the spoonful. I'm trying to restrict my calories though... might have to have a splurge day just for mayo!

On a side note- I will never enjoy Hellman's the same way again after having Duke's. I've compared the ingredients and the only thing Duke's has that Hellman's doesn't is paprika. So, if/when I make my own, I'll definitely be putting in paprika. I find even if I mix paprika into Hellman's it improves the taste, aka makes it taste more like Duke's.

It's admirable that these people are so dedicated, but they ARE hoarders. they're just functioning, and not hoarders of trash but of unused items. I can't believe how much stuff these people had just sitting in their houses. Having grown up and lived in small apartments my whole life, the waste of space is a little disturbing. And the waste of goods in disgusting. Who can eat 200 boxes of cereal before they go bad?
I say these people should use their crazy skills to donate to food pantries and shelters. Otherwise, this seems like a shameful waste of too many variables to count.
As I sat there watching, I said to myself, only in America.

I'm out of both cheese and bread but I always have plenty of mayo- duke's is literally my favorite food. I am running out to the store first thing tomorrow to try this out! I can't believe I never thought of it...
Just yesterday I was wondering if I could cook chicken breast in mayo... Now I've got some ideas for experiments!

Peanut butter and alfalfa sprouts is life changing. Also if you are feeling particularly adventurous, add tuna salad. Amazing play of textures.
We tend to think of pb as a sweet add-in since with jelly or jam it is sweeter, and it's in so many dessert items. But it is actually savory! (Assuming you buy the real stuff!)

Yeah whack ass spam.

Anyways, this year I'm hosting a goth-y Valentine's party for my single friends- we're dressing vampy, watching Rocky Horror, and I'm preparing lots of creepy food. Bloody beets, 'special ingredient' Bolognese, and black velvet cake (red velvet is soooo cliche). I might do the garlic crostini- yummy and will keep away some of those creatures of the night.

I just commented about this cake on the flour substitutes post the other day! Hugh is my idol and though I'm neither gluten intolerant nor a huge fan of cake, I'm desperate to try this recipe!

Savory! Best are mac and cheese, grilled cheese, pizza, cheesesteak... really anything featuring melted cheese. BONUS POINTS for crispy bacon and doughy bread. And to wash it all down, an orange soda.
Sadly, in Scotland where I am located now- NONE of these things are available. Back bacon is weird and hammy, mac and cheese from a box tastes poisonous, 'pizza' is a relative term, and chip steaks are unheard of. Also most orange sodas feature aspartame which I am allergic to :(
I'm so excited for New Year's morning- I'll be back stateside and have all of these items available to cure my hangover!

When I was a kid, we used to throw huge Christmas eve parties with a bunch of hors d'oeuvres type stuff and big vats of lentil and potato leek soups. Now that my parents have split and it's just me, my mom, and my sister on Christmas eve, we still do hors d'oeuvres for dinner- usually shrimp cocktail, pigs in blankets, bruchetta, and some cheeseboards/charcuterie. This year my mom wants to add fondue, which I am all for!

Christmas day we always have Pilsbury Grands cinnamon buns for brunch, and then usually something like filet mignon or steaky in the evening. However this year my sister and I both missed Thanksgiving so we are having Thanksgiving on Christmas!
