Maybe it would be nice if AT could show us actual, realistic student living conditions, instead of some from the privileged few.

I love it, but then again I grew up in home owned by two artists who chose to decorate with rusty art works, so...

As someone who moved eight hours with twelve boxes of books, I completely adore my nook. I'm going to have to move a lot in the next several years, and while I'm not going to get rid of any of my physical books, it is easier to move them when they are digital. I still love bookstores and will buy used when it's cheaper, though. However, I have to admit that it's fantastic when a new book is released and I can simply download it, rather than have it shipped to my house or go to the store.

A Nancy -- pineapple juice and beer -- is also very tasty.

Seconding the comment that bananas bring them out. I lived with three other girls in undergrad, and we got a ton. I did everything I could to get rid of them but we always found out.

Turned out one of the girls bought a banana, sort of covered it up, and forgot about it. I found it when it was the peel and a puddle of goo. Getting rid of that got rid of the flies.

WIN, verily.

Also, babies are fine as long as they don't double digit double dip. I just went to a party where the parents cooed as the toddler stuck her chip in the salsa twenty times and sucked it off. You may enjoy watching your child play like an adult, but those of us wanting to eat the salsa are usually grossed out by that point.

I live in a studio with much less kitchen space than any of these. I clicked on this link to get ideas for my kitchen... and none of these will work because they are not small kitchens.

First year we had our dog, we had to move all the ornaments up a foot on the tree so she would not destroy them.

Next year, I'm switching back to the Slingshot day planner -- DIY created with lots of useful information, independent bookstore lists, book suggestions, etc.

Most of the time, my friends get the idea to leave when I say "It's been fun, but I've got to go to bed." I know two people though that don't get that and have stayed at my place for hours afterward, even when I looked at the clock thirty minutes later and went, "Damn, it's X now? Wow, that's late."

I hate people who don't get hints.

I use amazon's wishlist, but mostly only for myself. My old college buddies used to use it for me, but I pretty much would send a list of amazon links to my mother, who would then send me the confirmation email to make sure it was all right.

...we don't have many surprises here, haha.

Do You Keep a Wishlist?

Personally, I have a ton of books (English grad student here) and the best way to organize them, I've found, is to spread them around my apartment. I have four stackable bookcases that each come up to my waist. Two are on different walls in my living room, two are side by side in my bedroom. My collection looks nice but not like it's taking over my life.

You can find a ton on Etsy. My mom got really into them and made an entire lesson plan for her students about them.

I have a studio with a half wall myself (it's weird, but it was originally a one bedroom except the walls were all interior, so no windows = against code). I considered getting a couch, but instead I bought a chaise lounge chair and I absolutely love it! If I have friends over, I can use it like a couch (and I have extra big pillows on the floor as well). But if it's just me, I can stretch out on it to study, watch movies, read books... Perfect compromise!

Oh, and the same roommate who threw the banana? Also felt like it was perfectly acceptable to leave the door unlocked. It was not fun when I had to get up at 5 AM for work to see the door open because she couldn't be bothered to see her boyfriend out and lock the door behind him.

Seconding the cleaning habits. I spent four months once doing all of the dishes for three of us because the other two couldn't be bothered. I also had a roommate once who didn't know what an indoor voice was and screamed she was going to kill me because a banana fell out of my bag and I left it (because I didn't realize it had fallen out).

Also figure out how you stand on the AC/heat. I had a roommate once who HAD to have the AC at 77 and would stay up later than all of us to ensure that it was at that. She'd also change it to that even if someone else had put it on 76 or 78.

I'm never living with other people again. The only benefit, so far as I can see, is if you get locked out you can call them.

My parents have a glass fish bottle that they use for a soap dispenser. Really cute!

It is very easy to find XL twin sheets now. When I lived in the dorm, I found many different kinds at Target at a good price (I just used a twin comforter for the bed).

Essentials For Your First Dorm Room

To echo everyone else, these are not dorm rooms. When I lived in the dorms, I was in a brand new building which was very pretty (for a dorm) but not nearly as nice as these. I would much prefer to see real dorm rooms that real college students could actually attempt. Cool pics, but I'd rather the title be something like "Best Student Living" or something like that. Don't mislead your readers into thinking these are dorms by calling them "Best Dorm Rooms" when they are so obviously not.
