That first picture is Agnes Emery's, I believe, and I don't remember it ever being in House Beautiful. (Her work is often featured in French magazines, Cote Sud, Elle Decor, Marie Claire Maison, etc.) Here is the website. They make the most gorgeous tiles. Haha! I have those exact Frankl armchairs. We bought them in beat-up condition in the early 80's, one upholstered in teal metallic tweed and the other in some kind of mustard brocade-y floral. We had them reupholstered in what seems to me now very early-eighties style (black leather with pinkish mohair on the seat and back sections), but looking at the ones above, I see that our choice was very much in keeping with the original. What is amazing is that they have always fit in with whatever direction my decor has taken over the years (I guess it helps that it's always been eclectic.) They have seen heavy use and are in dire need of reupholstering, but I will probably have to take out a second mortgage to do it! American Style Through the Decades: The Forties |

I like the shape and the shade fabric, but I think it would look better if the base were a different color than bright white. The white in the shade is an off-white, and the bright white makes it look dingy. I actually think it would be more chic if the base was the same color as the yellow-green in the shade fabric. I have 3, and they have improved my life (or at least my house's comfort level.) They are the perfect height for my armchairs, which are somehow awkwardly proportioned (or maybe I am!) and not comfortable to sit in for long periods. But now that I can stretch my legs out on the poufs, they are perfect -- more like lounges. Also, I love the colors I got: candy pink, apple green and rich orange. Mine are the classic moroccan ones, and if they exist, I would love to have a waterproof one in the same style for my garden. Rooms with a Pouf from Our House Tours |

If you can't find a match, it would actually look cute mixed with similar chairs in other bright colors. I know FerMob does similar ones, though they can be expensive. Flora Grubb carries some pieces, and I got a fuschia side table from there on sale a few summers ago. Source For Outdoor Bistro Chair? Good Questions |

A rare Roseville Pauleo tree vase for $68.00 at the Alemany flea market in SF. I am not particularly into Roseville, and I did not know what it was at the time; I just liked it. I have seen a few (a very few) listed on Ebay and art pottery sites, for like $1,200. You Paid WHAT for That? Best Secondhand Finds Ever |

For years it really bugged me that lamp cords were left visible in so many otherwise meticulously styled interiors I saw in French magazines, but gradually I realized it was intentional. You've Got to Hide Your Cord Away |

The entire issue was a huge disappointment except for Iris's place, which was entirely... astonishing. I will give AD another chance based on this alone. Iris Apfel's "Exuberant" Home in Architectural Digest |

I like it. It has a nice feeling, and does not seem at all like it was done on the cheap. I also like that effort was made to tie in the building's style and mood. I just saw an article about a couple who gutted their Victorian and made the interior all clean and modern. It was horrifying (especially to me as a Victorian owner); all of the character was erased, and there was a total disconnect between inside and out. I am not saying that a Victorian has to be decorated with taxidermied owls (though I do happen to have one of those), but I think there is a way to do modern without dishonoring a building's essential character. I am a serious shelter mag addict. If I saved all of the money (and time!) I spend on magazines, I could probably realize the decorating projects I now only dream about. But like so many others commenting here, I sit all day in front of a computer, and there is nothing like curling up at home with a brand new magazine (favorites: French and Italian Marie Claire, Spanish Architectural Digest, Australia Vogue Living, Habitania, Veranda, the Cotes -- Sud, Est and Oest, French and American Elle Decor, Art & Decoration...I could go on. Unfortunately.) So, I like that the online magazines are free, and I do enjoy the content of many, but it's just not the same experience. Plus, my mom and I trade magazines back and forth, and that wouldn't work with online magazines, since she's computer illiterate. How the Online Shelter Mag Industry Exploded The New York Times |

I live in San Francisco, and I know and am friendly with (and in some cases friends with) several people from the apartment building next door to the right of my house, my neighbors to my left, my neighbors directly behind my house and neighbors from the housing complex across the street (whose cat we happen to have adopted!) One of my neighbors is my occasional handyman/gardener. Maybe this isn't typical in a big city, but I'm sure that part of the reason is that I have lived in my house for almost 30 years and some of my neighbors have been here even longer. (TL;DR) I am so glad to read this post and these comments. I have wondered for the last few years whether I am letting my house drive me mad. It's my chief hobby and creative outlet, and I love it, but it's a big Victorian that could comfortably accomodate an entire family, and it's just me there since my son and his girlfriend got their own place. I thought housekeeping would be easier for one, but it doesn't seem to make a difference; I am still overwhelmed. The last thing I want to do after working all day is to come home and do housework (and anyway I need daylight to clean properly!) So that leaves me the weekend, and it's not long enough to fit everything in. Just getting from one end of the house to the other, and tromping up and down the stairs with my heavy Dyson (don't get me wrong; I love it) or loads of laundry takes time and strength that always seems to run out before the chores do. I am glad to read the suggestions about washing these. I got one of these cheap because it had been a floor model, and it is a little bedraggled looking. Maybe washing it will perk it up. How To Clean Garland Light by Tord Boontje? Good Questions |

Great post, Tess! I have huge open-house buffet-style parties a couple of times a year, and though they are a hassle to prepare for (my house is big and ... complicated), I love having them because they motivate me to REALLY get everything into perfect shape. Then after the party, in the wake of the exhaustion from preparing and excitement of seeing all my friends, I can relax and really enjoy my home at its best. If only I could be this motivated on an everyday basis. A New Reason To Clean: Goodbye Guilt, Hello Enthusiasm |

Wonderful colors and textures! I love all of these and would welcome any of them into my home (except maybe the 'drugs' pillow which is a little too poppy for my look.) But I don't think any of these items is embroidered. Aren't they needlepoint (except for the kilim chair, which is woven)? Trendy Embroidery |
