No, it won't work on pecans unfortunately, pecans are too smooth all over, whereas walnuts have a little weak spot.

You can definitely just use a screwdriver, you can also use the pointy type of vegetable peeler, or the right knife.

Why, yes I have (both), vonponyfeather! And it didn't look like this at all, lots more plastic sheeting, stained carpet, and crappy drywall. And now I have a job where I visit "poor people" at home all day, and their homes don't look much like this either!

However, I have also lived in London in homes that were too old to get everything perfectly clean and smooth without spending $$$, but that had amazing proportions and bones, and where the layers of paint and texture were quite beautiful. It made sense there to embrace it and work with it. Apartment Therapy to me has always been about listening to your home, that's why all my places over the years have been very different.

I say that to say that I think the outrage and guilt tripping in this thread is misplaced and silly, but yes, if you're trying to make a Phoenix Mc Mansion look like this, that's just bizarre.

I don't doubt it's cold inland and further up the coast (they closed the Grapevine for snow this week), but it has not been in the high 20s in LA!

43? Oh noes! No wonder everyone in Whole Foods was wrapped up and shivering like characters in a Dickens novel!

I did this a little in an old apartment in London 10 years ago. I won't be doing it in my 1940's place in LA now! If it's right for the building it's gorgeous, but it's usually not right, especially in the US.

The high 20's? Where do you live? In Hollywood it has hardly dipped below 50!

I bought a gorgeous non-patchwork hide from these guys (http://shop.ebay.com/madcowtowndecor/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686), who also have a big selection of patchwork ones.

I like that rug. It's a patchwork cowhide. You can find them on ebay.

Are you in LA? Go to the clearance annex of F&S fabrics on Pico Blvd. They have an amazing selection of (previously) really expensive upholstery fabric from about $5 a yard. It is inspiring just to walk around and I think it's important to feel fabric before you buy it. Seriously, I can't recommend F&S enough!

This Christmas I'll be decorating a giant origami craft paper shark, and topping it with a West Elm figurine of a jumping Apartment Therapy. Chic, no?

Actually, I feel sorry for the folks who did this, I can absolutely understand why they did (especially if they have kids), and it clearly wasn't done as the hipster style statement AT are now pushing it as.

On their own couch, sure, but probably not when visiting someone they aren't super close to.

Sorry, but what Bepsf said! I hate the look of sad, droopy tab tops.

I think IKEA's best basic curtain is the plain white twill one with the grommet top (I forget the name) - I have those in every room in my place.

There's a difference between breaking up a wall of bold color (in which case I agree that art etc work) and trying to break up a wall of color that isn't quite right. If the color is wrong, I think it will never seem right, and for most people, will bug them and make them feel dissatisfied with the room. If after you live with it a couple of days, it still seems wrong, I say repaint (however much of a pain it is), don't try to "break it up" or draw attention away from it.

As an aside, this is another post where using the royal "we" is totally ridiculous.
