While location isn't everything, it can be the difference between living the lifestyle you want and ... not. After years and years of compromising on cheaper, larger places which gradually got further and further away from the inner city due to rising rents, I finally moved into an apartment in the residential section of an iconic cafe and bar strip, Acland Street, in the inner beachside suburb of St Kilda in Melbourne. The difference it has made is monumental. The beach is 500 metres, so I go there every day the temperature's over about 24C (76F), which is every day in summer, even just for an hour after work. I have the choice of two trams to town/work - which takes 30 mins door-to-door - and lots of other public transport, including direct to the largest and best shopping centre/mall in Melbourne, and a taxi rank across the road, so I've got rid of my car (I'm hiring one in a couple of days for a day trip to the hills - much cheaper than having one full time). I have two supermarkets and three liquor stores within 500 metres and a minimart and a small organic grocer across the road. There are three medium-sized music venues that host local and international acts (saw Dinosaur Jr last night, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion next week) within 600 metres, and four bars with live music most nights a week, including one just across the road. There are two monthly farmer's markets and a community garden within 700 metres. The St Kilda Festival is an annual event that closes our streets and draws half of Melbourne - I walk to it and pop home for the bathroom. In summer there's a weekly night market with food, music and crafts in gardens just around the corner. There are cafes and restraurants ranging from excellent coffee to fine dining all within 500 metres, and there's something open almost 24 hours. If I open my balcony door I get street ambience, including great live music from the bar across the road; if I close it I get almost complete silence. There's a very strong local community, including a lots of musicians, and it's very easy to get to know people and see them everywhere. Living here has completely changed my lifestyle, I completely love it, I wish I'd done it years ago, and it is thoroughly worth any trade-offs. 10 Tips for Knowing When to Walk Away from the \"Perfect\" Place Renters Solutions |

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the arrangement used to illustrate this story actually doesn't work very well? It would be so much better and stronger if there were *something* tying all these pictures together - colour, theme, style, something! - other than the fact they're all hung as a group. I made this last night & it was delicious. I only had 3 eggs but had whites in the freezer so I substituted 2 whites for 1 of the eggs, with no problems. I used 1 tin of artichoke hearts, not sure if it = 1 cup or not but it was fine. I used about 2/3 bunch cavolo nero - 2-3 the number of stalks suggested - but they were narrow stalks. No need to pre blanch or soften. I added about 1/2 tsp salt, which was perfect. I cooked it 20 mins fan forced @ 200C, then topped it with flaked almonds (so they didn't over toast) & cooked it another 10 mins - this was enough. I cooked it in a 24cm terracotta Spanish cazuela sprayed with olive oil & this was fine - thick enough & came out no problem at all. I think I'd call it a tart rather than a pie as no lid, or perhaps a croustade when topped with almonds. I didn't use the avocado. I think it would be good served with pork chops or good-quality pork sausages. Or topped, once removed from oven, with prosciutto slices? Unless stated, I followed recipe exactly. With almost every single post currently relating to your summer, I can't help but wish AT and Kitchn didn't have such a focus on whatever is the current northern-hemisphere season. I live in the southern hemisphere and it's winter down here, and all these beaches and salads and picnics and cold drinks and ice-creams etc. leave me - well, cold. I find square/rectangular containers much better for the fridge & freezer. Australian company Decor (http://decor.com.au/) produces clear plastic containers in an extensive range of sizes. You can find a size that fits pretty much anything (even pastry sheets; olives - with a removable slotted basket; meat - with a removable drip tray; and cakes - with a removable tray to lift them out). They stack beautifully, they're inexpensive, and readily available from your local supermarket or variety store. I sound like an ad, I know, but I just love them. I use French Arc or Le Parfait (they are virtually interchangeable) clip jars for storing pretty much everything that doesn't reside in the fridge. They are much quicker and easier to open and close that jars with a screw top and, I think, look fantastic. My family's favourite Boxing Day breakfast is summer pudding with clotted cream, made in the week before Xmas; but, as I say, we live in Aus, so it's summer @ Xmastime and HOT. And we don't have Thanksgiving of course. We have Melbourne Cup Day instead! And it's usually hot, too (and windy, and rainy: it's Melbourne!) "2 *cans* refrigerated crescent rolls"? Seriously, you have tinned *rolls* in the States? I can't even imagine how this works. Oh, no, I see, it's tinned roll *dough*. Any suggestions for lower-tech Aussies? We have frozen puff & shortcrust pastry and pastry sheets, would this work? Or could I make a similar dough on the dough cycle of my breadmaker?
